Harriet?
« on: Saturday 27 August 11 13:03 BST (UK) »
Hello, not sure if any one can help, not holding out to much hope, but like they say  "you can only ask",
a lady named Harriet shown to be living with my grandad in 1851 1861 1871, as his wife, even though l can not find a marriage, Harriet place of birth is given as Born at Sea, another census it says Jersey Channel island born 1815, unfortunately l am unable to find her surname so that does not help, Harriet living in a place called Spittelgate Grantham Linc's in 1861, but ends up living in Ropsley Linc's, l have no idea where she was living before 1851, any one out there help me trace this Harriett's family?, thank you June

Hmmmmm....a difficult one.

Here is a list from familysearch.org of all the Harriets born on the Channel Islands 1810-1820.
It lists 146 entries!....

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0esf/

Using the 1881 census on Findmypast and searching on Harriet first name, place of birth Channel Islands and county Lincolnshire throws up this entry-

Harriet Wass born 1816 age 65 in Channel Islands and living Rice Wood Rd, Ropsley, Lincolnshire. Married to James Wass agr.labourer and living with them is 2 boarders aged 11 and 0 (ie newborn?)

I can't finnd a marriage between James and Harriet

Findmypast has come up with a marriage between James Wass and a Harriet Haig in Manchester in 1850. FreeBMD says registered June 1850 Manchester.

Still can't find a birth of a Harriet Haig on the Channel Islands !

Hi M C,                    Thank you for your help l have had a look at the site for Harriet, well some of it, also l found that marriage for a Harriet hague, but like you not her birth in channel island or at sea, l have visitors this afternoon so l will look threw some more pages on the Harriet ?  pages, you are quite right a tricky one, l also found a marriage for a Jane Cook & James Wass which l immediately thought l had found them but her name being Jane put me off and also l cannot find them after their marriage or able to prove that Jane is Harriet, even though l have sent for the marriage cert, it says Jane was living in Spittelgate Linc's nothing about her birth, so not sure if l will ever solve this,

Cheers for now June

The 1861 census for James and Harriet shows a son John born in 1852.

If you get his birth certificate - John Frederick Wass, September 1852 Grantham, 7a 412, that should give you Harriet's maiden name and possibly a way forward (or backwards!)

The most reliable Jersey births available on-line are St Helier baptisms from 1842 onwards, too late for Harriet, if she was indeed born in Jersey and baptized here she will only be found in the parish records in Jersey.

Just had another look at the 1881 census for James and Harriet and have just discovered there are 2 James Wass's living in the same street at the same time!

We have James Wass (born 1831 Ropsley) agr.lab. and wife Mary A Wass both born in Ropsley with their 4 sons all born in Ropsley. They are living at No.4 Rice Wood Road, Ropsley.

There is also a James Wass (born 1822 Ropsley) agr.lab. and wife Harriet Wass (born 1816 Jersey CI), no children but 2 boarders. They are also living in Rice Wood Rd, Ropsley (no house no.)

It makes you wonder if these 2 James's are the same and we have some kind of transcription errors here! ??? ???

Hello Jerseylily & MC,
l have the birth cert for John Frederick Wass born Spittelgate Grantham 1852, it says mother is Jane Cook, but it also has the name Harriet under the name of Jane but it has been  crossed out, l sent for this in 2006, but still not cleared this up, l also have a marriage cert for James WAss & a ANN cook , not Jane, so you see my problem is it Jane Cook Ann Cook or even a Harriet who Say's she was born in Channel Island, or could Harriet be Jane or Ann and is the surname Cook, funny goings on, l have never found another Jane /James or Ann/James in any censers,

MC,        l think the other James living near the other James is to young and like you say has afew children, where as the other James living with Harriet only has one son, apart from 2 boarders which is strange, l have the birth cert for the boy boarder Albert but no fathers name given only his mother a Mary Ann Rawlinson, so if any one can find a Ann Cook Jane Cook or a Harriet cook and can tie them with James Wass born Ropsley 1821,  thanks for your time & trouble very much obliged, cheers for now June
