Michael & Patrick Walsh of Carrowkeel, near Hollymount
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 13:19 BST (UK) »
Brothers Michael & Patrick Walsh immigrated to Illinois, USA. Neither married.

Michael's obit indicates he was a "second cousin" to my grgrgrandfather's son James Walsh in LaSalle Co. Illinois, and I would like to learn the specifics of how they are connected.

Per their headstone in Lostlands Cemetery, LaSalle Co, Illinois:

Michael: b. Sept 11, 1852 d. Nov 12, 1918
Patrick: b. Jan 18, 1869 d. Jan 22, 1903
Sons of Patrick & Mary Walsh
Born in Carrowkeel, Co. Mayo, Ireland

Michael imm c. 1878, lived in LaSalle Co. Illinois, bought a farm in Iowa and died in Minnesota.

Patrick lived in LaSalle Co. Illinois from about 1891/93 until he died in a farming accident (the newspaper account is quite detailed!).

Family members & places listed in Patrick's probate:

Parents:

Hello Steph and welcome to rootschat  :)

Have you looked at the Irish census. I wonder if this is Mary and some of the family - the names match.

Mary Walsh 1901

I think the same family are here in 1911 - ages are out but this often happens

Mary Walsh 1911

Your grt grt grandfather's son would be your gt grandfather - is he James?

So... Patrick (or Mary) and gt gt grandfather are 1st cousins

not sure where that leads to but just trying to figure it out  ;)

regards
heywood

Thanks Heywood! I look forward to rootschatting.

Yes, that is Michael & Patrick's family they left behind. I loved the census detail on the houses and out buildings.

If the newspaper really used the cousin terminology properly, then my grgrgrgrandfather Bartly Walsh would be a brother to Michael & Patrick's father Patrick's father.

James> James B> Bartly

Michael & Patrick> Patrick> his father

I found a Patrick Walsh on mayoancestors.com d. 1891, which would agree w/ what Michael said in his brother Patrick's probate. His address was Carrowkeel and he was 67, which makes b. 1824, which seems to fit.

Are there many resources to go back any further on either line? I've found James B & 2 siblings' baptisms in Ireland, but that's it for church records.

Thanks again,
Steph

Hi again,

take a look at:

My Ancestor came from Ireland

Introduction to Irish records

plus the Mayo resources on this thread.

Family Search has Irish civil records but Walsh is a  popular name as you will know.

Griffiths Valuation may also have some names in the right area.

best wishes

I have a Martin Walsh, born 4 November 1902. His father is Michael Walsh from Garrowkeel, Hollymount.
His sister is Miss Mary Walsh living at 384 Albany Way, Boston, MA in 1923.
Martin Walsh is listed as a labourer, able to write and read English. His last address was Claremorris. He had dark hair and brown eyes and was 5' 7". In 1923 he said from Liverpool to New York aboard the Tuscania, and arrive to NY on 6 April 1923. His final destination Boston.

In 1943 he is with his cousin, John Armson, born 21 September in Scranton, PA
Martin and John Armson (now ages 40 and 44) are living in the Bronx; Martin has a US passport 1932.
They are employed with the United Fruit Company. They list their US address as 339 E 141st Street, NYC.
They are sailing on Feb 28, 1943, to Hamilton, Bermuda on the Santa Marta, to Baltimore, Maryland arriving March 3, 1943.

Your Martin doesn't seem to fit with the 3 Walsh families I'm currently sorting out.

I haven't seen any evidence that Michael Walsh who died in Minnesota in 1918 ever married or had children. At least his obit doesn't mention any.

However, I have just started conferring with someone in Ireland who still lives in the Claremorris area who says there are 4 or 5 Walsh families in that Carrowkeel North--Hollymount--Farmhill area. I am hoping she can go back enough generations to connect some of the different ones.

There is a Walsh family listed in Carrowkeel North, house 9, in the 1911 census that might be a fit to yours. Michael & Patrick's family (from my post)  are in house 6.

The Michl. Walsh (son of Bartly) listed in Carrowkeel North in Griffith's Valuation is the brother of my grgrgrandfather James B. Walsh.
