* COMPLETED *1841 census - Monkseaton
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 20:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace details of Benjamin Bell, born about 1831 in Walker, Northumberland.

I have found his whereabouts in 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891.

In trying to find him in the 1841 census, I have discovered a Benjamin Bell - age 10 - living at Seaton Villa(s) in the township of Monkseaton - and wonder if this could possibly be him.

The other people on the same census page are:

Elizabeth Elstad - age 60
Jane Simpson - age 25
Jane Morgan - age 15
Samuel Rutherford - age 18
Benjamin Bell - age 10

Could anyone help?
Maybe someone knows what Seaton Villa(s) were and why people with different surnames would be living at the same address.
Researching the names Mckenzie / Mackenzie from Ross and Cromarty especially Scoraig and Rherivach.

The names Fraser, MacGillivary and Grant from Daviot & Dunlichity.

The name of Fraser from Lanarkshire.

The name of Bell from Northumberland.

The name Chilla / Chylla / Chyla from Poland.

Firstly, the census only tells you who was there on that particular night - they may just have been visiting

The most obvious reason for different surnames would be grandchild or nephew of the Head of household.  Unfortunately the 1841 census is no help as it doesn't show relationships.   ::)

H-lassie,

The 1841 Bell details found by Shilo ( page ref Piece 820 Book 19 Folio12 Page 17-and Folio13 Page 18) showed the family in Foremans Row ( within the "Township" of Seaton Delaval, which was within the Parish of Earsdon.

You have subsequent census details of Benjamin still living in Foremans Row
( he must have liked living in what was reputed to be the longest miners row in the county)

I think that confirms them to be the same Benjamin.

The Elizabeth in Monkseaton on 1841 census at Piece 825 Book 5 Folio 17 Page 9, transcribed as Elstad, was recorded as Elstob by the census enumerator. The common theme for those five residents in Seaton Villa was that the three females were F.S. ( = female servants) and the two males were M.S. ( = male servants)
