GODFREY marriage abt 1720's
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 23:34 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a marriage for Benjamin Godfrey to Rebecca (unknown surname) abt 1720 +/-5 possibly in Suffolk/Essex area.

They appear in Haverhill in about 1724 onwards when their first known child was baptised but I haven't found a marriage in Haverhill so not sure where to start searching for their marriage.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Di

Sorry folks but I'm still knocking my head against this rather solid brickwall.  ::)

If anyone could possibly confirm that there is or isn't a marriage record for Benjamin Godfrey on any Suffolk marriage index I'd really appreciate it.

Must admit that I don't even know if there is a Marriage Index for Suffolk that covers this era (early 1700"s) but anything would be very much appreciated - even if it's just a negative.

Thanks a lot

Di

Hi Di,

Not much to offer but in case you don't have these entries, have listed their burials;
Haverhill St.Mary;
15-10-1768 Benjamin GODFREY
4-2-1763     Rebecca         "       "wife of Benjamin"

Taken from Suffolk Burial Index.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the burial info. I did have those but I had two queries about them -
Firstly, I had Benjamin buried 15 Oct 1768, not 1786. Maybe I mis-recorded the info.

The great news was that I had found two burials for a Rebecca Godfrey, one on the 4 Feb 1763 and an earlier one as 20 March 1759 - both Haverhill. I assumed that one was the mother, the other was their daughter but I couldn't find which was Benjamin's wife.

You've answered that question so thanks ever so much.

Shame there doesn't appear to be a marriage for them but maybe I need to look further afield.

Thanks a lot - really appreciate your help.

Di

Hi Di,

My mistake - Benjamin's burials was 1768 not 1786.
and Rebecca's burial is endorsed "wife of Benjamin"

Sorry for the mistake.

That's great - thanks Alan.

I'm forever typing dates incorrectly and wonder why I can't find the record next time I check  ::)

If it's no inconvenience, would you mind checking to see if there are any other Godfrey deaths recorded on your list for Haverhill in the 1700's. I have a record of a couple of others but not too sure if they're the children of Benj & Rebecca or if there's any other info recorded.

Many thanks

Di

Oh that's brilliant - Thanks ever so much Alan.  :-*

The extra bits of info that you've listed makes sense and are ever so helpful and useful

Amazing what a couple of extra words or notations can mean to a family tree  ;D

Many thanks - REALLY appreciate your help.
