Hydrolic Crane public house
« on: Friday 02 September 11 20:43 BST (UK) »
I was just talking about pub names today and remembered once ( early 1970's) seeing a pub called the Hydrolic Crane in Newcastle, I think perhaps on the Walker Road or similar industrial area.
Is it still there? Anyone know how it got its name? Presumably from nearby crane installation?
Any other similarly industrial- type pub names on Tyneside?
( Our Byker publican was Jonas Bambrough, Hare and Hounds, Percy St, St Peter's Quay in the 1860's)

Hi
Hydraulic Crane, Scotswood Road.

Not there anymore.

As far as I remember, it used to be on the south side of Scotswood Road and probably about 20 years ago someone tried to make a go of it, but I think it has now been demolished and a garage is on the site.

Hope this helps.

Neale

A bit more info

Reminiscences
‘Scotswood Road was known to ‘have a pub
on every corner’ and whilst it is true that
there were pubs all the way along one side
of the road, on the river side, the factory
took up most of the space. The last pub on
Scotswood Road was the Hydraulic Crane
which stood on what is now the entrance to
the Newcastle Business Park.’
Doug Little
The Hydraulic Crane pub was named after
the machinery which was used in the fitting of the huge naval gun
mountings:
‘The turret was fabricated and was about the size of a three bedroomed
semi. The gun mounting was assembled over a large hole in the floor of
the factory, as like an iceberg, most of it is below and cannot be seen.
When completed, the mounting was lifted bodily from the hole and
dropped into the waiting naval vessel by a massive hydraulic crane that
was previously designed by Armstrong. The pub with the same name
only disappeared when the road was first widened.’ Sidney Jones

I used to regularly travel by train between Newcastle and Carlisle in I think the 1960s and 70s. Then then a westward line from the Central Station ran on the north bank of the Tyne, between the shore and Scotswood Road. The large building that housed the pub was a feature easily viewed from the carriage windows.

PS- sorry for my mis-spelling of Hydraulic!! I thought it looked odd when I typed it in, but failed to check it. Am not an engineer but, as a linguist, I should have known to use a dictionary!
Thanks for comments.

I think if you wrote the title you can change the spelling using the edit heading similar to editing by putting the word Completed in the subect heading.
