Royal Navy - Registered Twice ?
« on: Friday 02 September 11 23:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Bit of a odd problem, via the NA Site I have loacted what I think is an ancestor but it appears he registered to join the Royal Navy in two different locations on the same day.

Name    Nutter, George
Register Number:    8154
Division:    Royal Marine Light Infantry: Chatham Division
When Enlisted/Date of Enlistment:    15 October 1892
   15 September 1874   ADM 159/4

Name    Nutter, George
Register Number:    6484
Division:    Royal Marine Light Infantry: Portsmouth Division
When Enlisted/Date of Enlistment:    15 October 1892
   15 September 1874   ADM 159/11

George Nutter was born in 1874 and in Kent and on his marriage certificate in 1898 he is shown as a mariner. I am confused, there is probably and obvious answer but it is beyond me, and before I give them my £3.50 I would like to know which one or perhaps both is 'my' George.
Bloomfield, Knights, Whitmore, Warner (Suffolk)
Hamlin (London, Yorkshire, Scotland, Suffolk)
Mattocks, Newick, Nutter, (Kent)
Mattocks (Staffs)

Strange...I think they are both the same lad....One into the Chatham Division, the other into Portsmouth Div of the RMLI.Perhaps he was re-assigned Divisions on day he enlisted.
If he was a Kent lad id download the Chatham Div info 1st see if it says transferred to Portsmouth Div.

Hi

I cannot help feeling that you may have the wrong man in any event. If he was in the Royal Marines it should say this on his marriage certificate, not mariner. However, the medal roll has a G Nutter Civilian Able Seaman working on the Tug Advice in Chatham who was awarded the British War Medal.

There is also a RM G Nutter, Chatham Division, service No. 8154. who was awarded the 1914 Star and clasp, which indicates that he was part of the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division in France during the early few days of the war - 1500 of these men were interned in Holland.
