Help with Family History
« on: Saturday 03 September 11 12:54 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone this is my first time on the forum.
I have just started doing my Family History online and already I am hooked and would like to learn more.
I thought if I joined a forum or messageboard I could maybes get some help or information.
I have a long family history and I am building my Tree on the Geni website as well.
I don't really have the money in which to search records online as such but I have been using google.
There is a word in my Family history which is Hjelmaster and it is really bugging me as I don't really understand what it means? Is it the name of a place or a person? I have searched in google and have found nothing yet the only information I did find was that it could be the name of the family crest?
Not sure any help would be much appreciated?
I am a beginner in Family history and sometimes it is confusing but as I do have the time It would be interesting to learn more and find out something new.
I would also like to share some of my Family history to other members.
Many thanks

From Louise

Where are your family from?

What information do you have so far on names/places?

Hjel is a surname, not very common, of Norwegian origin.

On a general note, this is a good place to start:

Loads of advice about what online (and offline) resourses are available to you, free and otherwise - there's plenty available to those of us on a tight budget!!
Allibon(e) - Warwickshire (Burton Dasset, Pillerton Priors/Heresy, Radford Semele, Barford)
Ballard - Worcestershire
Phillips - Swansea
Cook - Malvern
Williams - Scotland (Glasgow)
Josephs - Jamaica (Spanish Town)

From Sweden and Norway, thankyou so much for helping out I can write on here more of what I have the names roos are on there too.

I will eventually write it down.
I was thinking of writing an online journal I want to find out as much as I can.
Many thanks

Louise, welcome to Roots Chat  :)

If you live in the UK, most of the larger libraries have free access to Ancestry for library members.  You may need to book, so best phone them before you go.

Hi Louise,
Could ie be Hjelmsater ? Again not sure if its a town , house or family name in Sweden but it does come up on google.
There are some trees on www.Ancestry.co.uk with lots of Roos names with "af Hjelmsater" after them.

It seems to be a farmed estate with a big house (in Sweden):

Hi Louise  :)

Welome to Rootschat!

You've come to the right place.  I've had loads of help and loads of fun and "met" loads of nice people.

As far as your possible Norwegian name is from, what context did you discover it in? Was it written down with other information, or part of a story?  Did you hear it or see it written?  Sounds exciting if you get to the bottom of it!

It might give us some better ideas.

Best wishes

Emms :)

Hi again!  ;)

By the way, you must have quite a bit of information from the list at the bottom of your post, but if you give a bit more in formation you may get some more precise help.

If you'd like more help with researching, make sure you use facts you are certain of and pick a board which is relevant such as the correct county.

As you probably know, you need to work backwards in general. So if you are having problems with a certain branch, find the eartliest information and post it making sure you say what you are trying to find next and where you have searched already.

The lists of resources at the top of each board for the county or topic are amazing.  They can keep me up all night looking!  Having said that, locals maay know other free resources you can look at.

Just a couple more thoughts!

You look as if you've done quite a bit already!

Good luck!

Best wishes

Emms :)!
