Ahmednagar, Bombay, India
« on: Saturday 03 September 11 17:14 BST (UK) »
I have come across a death in 1894 in Ahmednagar which may be my great-great uncle, Alfred Bickley.  The age fits and I know from the 1891 census that Alfred was in the 4th Kings.  Does anyone know how I can follow this up?

Where was he in 1891? Also, what was his age?

'4th Kings' is confusing. it could refer to the 4th Battalion of the Kings Regiment, aka the Liverpool Regiment. Or the old 4th Foot - the Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). I am sure he was in the latter, but it is best to check.

Hi,  yes he was 22.  His full name was Alfred Arthur David Bickley and he was born in Wolverhampton in 1872.  Unfortunately the census only states "soldier 4th Kings" so I don't know exactly what regiment it was.  I've been trying to find out what happened to him for a few years.

If the census was in Lancaster he was in the Kings Own.

Sorry it was in Wolverhampton - he was staying at his parents' home, presumably on leave.

To be in the Militia you had to live in the county. So it is safe to assume he did mean the Kings Own, aka Royal Lancaster Regiment. Their Depot was in Lancaster and they had two Regular battalions. The 2nd was in India from 1880 to 1896. So he was probably sent out there as a replacement soon after the census.

As he died in service they would have destroyed his record 20 years later.
