Patrick McCloskey
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 15:59 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I'm having real problems trying to find any record of my Great Grandad Patrick McCloskey's death. The story that was passed down is he knew he was dying and left Scotland to die in Ireland. I know from research he died between 1911 and 1921.
I've searched Scotlands People and I'm quite confident he didn't die in Scotland. Using The Emerald Ancestors site there is 3 possible Patrick McCloskey's in this time frame listed under Wills Calendars, 1. 1915 in Moneyneena 2. 1916 in Drum 3. 1916 in Coolnasillagh all Co Derry. Any one of these could be him?
This is what i know already:
born= 2/12/1871 in Claudy, Co Derry
parents= Denis McCloskey and Mary Heany
marriage= Ellen McCLOSKY 24/8/1899 at St Josephs RC, Parish Banagher. His residence at time was Moneyhaughan (which doesn't seem to exist anymore)
1901 census= He was living with wife and daughter Mary in Feeny, Co Derry.
1911 cesus= He was living in Hamilton,Scotland with wife and now 4 kids. He worked for County Council on Roads. (My Gran was born in 1912 and she couldn't remember him so he must of died before she was 5 or 6.)

Have I EXHAUSTED all online searches for his death record. Any advice on next step?

Regards Kevin

Kevin,
Patrick McCloskey is a very common name in the north of Co. Londonderry.
There is one listed on the Civil Registration section of familysearch which is quite close.
Patrick McLOSKEY (note spelling) Estimated birth year 1873. Death registered in Londonderry Oct- Dec 1916. Vol 2 Page 105.

Thanks kingskerswell,

Another possible match for my Great Grandad.
The place Moneyhaughan or Moneyhoghan is my biggest clue I think. If he returned home to die this is the village he was from. Not sure where it was I suspect it was near Feeny.
Could there be a list of headstones for a cemetry in Feeny online?

Kevin,
The townland of Moneyhoghan is about a mile and a half to the south-west of Feeny and can be found on Google maps. I am not aware of any on-line cemeteries. The familysearch civil records allow one to enter a rough  birth date and death date and they only show two deaths  between 1911 and 1920 of Patrick McCloskeys who were born in the 1870s. The other death was registered in Limavady on the Jan-Mar quarter of 1914 for a Patrick McCloskey whose estimated birth year was 1877.

Kevin,  I think I may be able to help you.  My Great Grandmother was Lizzie Mc Closkey whose parents were Denis Mc Closkey and Mary Heaney.  They did indeed live in Moneyhaughan Co Derry Northern Ireland.  You will not find this on a map as it is a town land name between the villages of Feeny and Park.  I am not sure how long this post has been up.  If you can reply here I would be willing to get in touch and fill in some of the gaps for you.

Moneyhaughen is still there-
https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/tirkeeran/learmount-tirkeeran-portion/banagher/moneyhoghan/

This thread was started in 2011 but lots more resources are now online.

Here's the 1916 death for Patrick McLoskey (informant as sister Lizzie)-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1916/05230/4448193.pdf
Cause of death was tuberculosis 'months' so perhaps he went back home hoping to improve his health.

Added- Patrick McCloskey born at Moneyhaughen not Claudy as in original post (Claudy is the registration sub-district)-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Kevin, yes we are definitely talking about the same family.  Lizzie was my Great Grandmother and it was her who registered Patrick's death.  Cassie another sister was a frequent visitor to Moneyhaughan.  My mother spent time in Scotland with Cassie, in fact she went to Stirling to the O'Malley house with Bridie and Kathleen Hasson.

Great to make the connection again.  We had lost touch with the family in Scotland.
