Dennison Harding/Thomas Fowler
« on: Wednesday 07 September 11 19:16 BST (UK) »
I would welcome any help as to why Denison Harding suddenly changed his name to Thomas Fowler- and later back again.

Details:  Birth 1853 Q4 Kemble, Wilts.      Baptism: 4 Dec 1853 at Kemble (as Dennis Jasper Harding)
Married 1877 Q3 in Newport, Mon. to Esther Stevens (1855, Chedworth, Glos.)
(He had moved to Newport to work on railway as carpenter.)
1881 Census- living at 21, East St with wife and first child William Harding. (name Denison Harding)
1884 - birth certificate of second son Frank Jasper Harding records him as Dennis Harding BUT every John's Directory for Newport (including 1884) which I have consulted from 1882-1908 lists the Head of House at 21, East St as Thomas Fowler, carpenter.
1891 Census- 21, East St. Now listed as Thomas Fowler. Wife and 4 children listed under the name Fowler.
1901 Census. ditto.
1911 Census.- 21, Walford St, Newport. He now has the 'hybrid' name Thomas Harding. Wife and his two children still in the house have returned to Harding. Also says Esther has been married for 34 years- which takes us back to 1877- when she married Denison Harding.
1913- Marriage certificate of youngest daughter, Edith lists father back to Denison Harding (still a carpenter).
1914- BMD death record for a Denison Harding 1914 Q2 Newport.
