William Dunn & Ann Miller - birth baptism details
« on: Thursday 08 September 11 14:08 BST (UK) »
William Dunn and Ann Miller were my ggg grandparents.

To date I have not been able to find William's birth / baptism/ christening details on any of the free sites so it could be a non-established church record possibly Presbyterian as later family members and relations were Presbyterian.
( ie. Golden Square Presbyterian Church in Berwick)
Calculating his year of birth from several census records indicates he was born about 1794/96 and we know he was born at Berwick upon Tweed.

According to Census information Ann Miller was born about 1792 ish.  in Eglingham Parish. An even more precise location is "Brandon White House" written above Glanton in the 1851 Census. The only possibility I've found is:-
Ann Millar - birth date 21st. May 1795. Baptised 15th. June 1795 at the Presbyterian Church in Branton. Father James. Mother Alice.
The area is correct as the White House at Brandon (Farm), Branton, Glanton  are close together within the Eglingham area.  However the date is 2/3 years out when calculating her year of birth from the census information.
The above record could be the correct one  as it is not unknown for the year of birth to be slightly out but I wonder if there are any more records - again probably non-established church records - for an Ann Miller (Millar) which also fit the above information. (I think Jora has some Branton Presbyterian Church records for this period?)

Many thanks to anyone who can help.    Rob.

www.dun.org.uk

it has helped me greatly with my Dun/n family. although the births are arranged by parent you can use ctrl +F and use dates or names. can't see a william in berwick at a quick look.

 Snippets of ecclesiastic geography.

Chillingham Barns lay within the "township" of Chillingham, within the Parish of Chillingham.

Brandon and Branton were two of the 15 "townships that comprised the Parish of Eglingham, which neighboured Chillingham Parish to the south.

Glanton was one of the "townships" that comprised the Parish of Whittingham, which lay to the south of Eglingham Parish.

There were Presbyterian churches at Glanton and Branton.

Hi Diddy, Janis and Michael,

Thanks for spending time looking into my request. Sorry I didn't respond sooner but I've been away for a week.

Interesting that Ann Millar was living at Chillingham Barns but baptised at Branton Presby. As Michael points out this is in the next Parish and a little further North but without going into detail I can think of several reasons why this is the case although we'll never know for sure.  Thanks Diddy for the Dun/n site information. Hadn't sussed that one out so I'll give it a thorough search.

 Rob,

 Probable scenario ?

Ann Millar living/born at Chillingham Barns.
Parents wanted a Presbyterian baptism so took her to the Branton Presbyterian church, the nearest one to their abode.

However there were closer Presbyterian churches in Wooler.

 Chillingham Barns lay at NU040260
 Branton lay at NU040340
 Wooler at NT993280

 Chillingham Barns on old maps....

Some Chillingham Barms residents of 1798 are listed on those loaning their horses and carts for the common good....

Hi Michael,

There's about 8/9 miles between Branton and Chillingham Barns but only about 4/5 miles to Wooler.
Several scenarios possible as to the circumstances of the baptism being in Branton.  Thanks for the map references. I love looking at maps past and present.

Whilst on the topic of maps I had a set of large scale maps / plans of the pit rows at New Delaval which I lodged in Blyth Library where I know you visit from time to time and which might be of interest to you or others. Got them from my Grandad who lived there and worked at the pit.

Regards,
Rob.
