Ellen Shovelar/Fred Taylor m. Strood 1911
« on: Friday 09 September 11 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help me trace Fred Taylor who married Ellen Shovelar in Strood 1911.

Ellen Elizabeth Shovlar b. 1990, Shorne, Strood, Kent (note changed spelling of Shovelar)
Ellen had 2 children(I don't know if Fred is their father though):
Albert R. Taylor b. Feb, 1911 Strood (Albert is my grandfather)
George Taylor c.1909/1910

In the 1911 census Ellen and the boys were listed at Ellen's parents house (Daniel and Mary Shovlar) in Strood, but Fred was not there.

In 1913 Ellen married again - William Edward Bennett b. 1890, Deal
In 1914 Ellen and Albert migrated to Western Australia. By 1915 William Bennett had joined them in Fremantle.

I am looking for any information about Fred.  I have Ellen's family tree but know nothing about Fred except he may have been previously married.

If it is possible for someone to check the records of the BDM index entries listed above for any more details about Fred, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you

Wallflower

Have you looked for Ellen Elizabeth's marriage to Frederick TAYLOR in the online parish registers at Medway Cityark?  I've checked Chalk, Shorne and Strood for the marriage so far without luck.  However, I did find the baptism of an earlier child

Charles Edward Holling(?)y SHOVLAR son of Ellen Elizabeth of Chalk baptised Chalk 30 Apr 1908.

It looks like he died the same year http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Maybe you can also find baptisms for the other boys if you haven't looked already?

Hey Casalguidi,
Thanks so much for your help - that info is brilliant.  I had no idea about Charles (how did you trace him to Ellen so quickly?) How terribly sad.

I had been trawling through the City Ark site with no luck and have checked the Chalk, Shorne, Strood entries and have started on Milton, where her parents lived in the 1911 census.  Not sure where to go to after Milton.
Were all marriages recorded by the church?  I haven't come across many Shovlars in the records and wonder if perhaps they weren't church-goers, so didn't baptise??

The details of William Bennett's father are also very useful as his date DOB was proving slippery (different in varyingrecords).
Again thank you so much.

The starting point for finding out more about Fred Taylor will be from the marriage cert to Ellen - have you got this?

Hopefully it will give you a fathers name, it will confirm if he is a bachelor or had been married before, and you may be lucky and get an age.

Marriage
Apr/May/Jun 1911
Strood ref 2a 1353

or you may be able to find it on CityArk as Casalguidi suggested - what address are they living at in 1911? That is close to the marriage date so may lead you to the right area.
Of course the marriage might not have been in a C of E church (may have been non conformist or register office) in which case it will not be in parish records.
