Slackthwaite, Slaigthwaite, Slaithwaite, Parack, Booth
« on: Saturday 10 September 11 10:20 BST (UK) »
Thanks to the W. Yorkshire PRs on Ancestry, I have recently discovered that some of my ancestors were baptised, married and buried in 'Slackthwaite Chappell' because of the times - late 1600's early 1700's - I am making an assumption that this is the Slaithwaite Chapel-of-Ease for Huddersfield St Peters, however, the place name Slaigthwaite appears on one of the registers on the same page as Slackthwaite and Slathwaite so now I am wondering if there were two or more different places ?
As a guide I have siblings John and Mary Lightowlers associated with  place names Booth, Slackthwaite and Parack, Slathwaite in 1717/1718.

any help in locating the places appreciated
Dave

Hello Dave

I think there is only one Slaithwaite with many different spellings. You are probably correct that 'Slaithwaite Chappell' refers to the chapel of ease for St Peter's Huddersfield, though it is worth remembering that some residents of Almondbury parish also used the Slaithwaite chapel, with the events being entered in Almondbury parish registers. However, neither 'Booth' nor 'Parack' appears in the place-names index of Almondbury PRs 1653-1703- sorry, I don't have St Peter's indexes. There is one solitary LIGHTOWLER event in this period in Almondbury parish, Hestera Lightowler de Bradshaw who was buried 7th December 1662.
John and Mary Lightowlers don't appear in the Almondbury baptisms 1703-27, so should be in St Peter's registers.

Thanks Lesley, I'll keep that in mind about the Almondbury Parish registers. I don't have Hestera (Esther ?) in my records, possibly a Lightowler by marriage.

I think Par(r)ack is probably Paddock, about 3 miles from Slaithwaite towards Huddersfield. I've also got ancestors whose abode is recorded as Parrack, I know they lived in the Lindley area from other records.

Might Booth be Booth Wood, also 3 or so miles from Slaithwaite, on the far side of Scammonden?

Dave-

I think Hester/Esther LIGHTOWLER may be a spinster, as the Almondbury clerk/vicar at that period seems quite careful in his recording of women as 'ux', 'vid' or 'relicta', giving the name of the husband. Young women are designated 'adolescentula'.

Anne and Lesley,
that's great, another couple of pins in the map and it is particularly good when a parish clerk or vicar puts in details to make it clear who people are. Just got to find her parents now.

If you have the PR transcripts to hand and don't mind checking for me,
in the Almondbury PRs are there any references to Lightowlers under spelling variations - Lyghtowlers, Lightollers, Lightouler, Leightowler, Lightholder etc. etc.

Thanks

Dave-
LIGHTOWLERS are very rare beasts in Almondbury parish. Other than Hester's burial I found only 1 baptism:
March 29th 1573
Isabella illeg ex Willelmo HOYLE et Margerea LYGHTHOLLER nuper habitantibus Worsper et ibi extunct fugientibus Marsdennam intra parochiam Almondburiae infantem peperit que bapt
Sus: Johannes HOYLE, Isabella GLEYDYLL et Jana HOYLE
There are no other baptisms (up to 1848)

and 2 marriages:
May 9th 1715
Johannes LIGHTOWLERS et Lidia KENWORTHY nupt

May 10th 1753
John LIGHTOWLERS of Huddersfield, clothier, Hanah HAIGH OTP, spinster, by banns.

(Sorry, I don't have marriage indexes after 1754, only unindexed film)

There are no other burials of Lightowlers up to 1851.

Thanks Lesley, that's great.
I think the Latin translates to something like
'(they ) newly lived in Worsper ? and are there to escape to Marsden within the Parochial (district) of Almondbury to have and baptise the infant.'
How many times have we heard that story in ancestry ? Margery will be a good one for me to try and trace. Only one or two families of Lightowlers in Yorkshire at that time and the Lancashire records are on line.
John and Lydia are also interesting. I have a marriage of William Kenworthy to Mary Lightowlers 2 Apr 1717 at Huddersfield. Brother and sister married to brother and sister ?
John and Hannah to research
excellent result, thanks very much
Dave
