Duncan VASS Inverness 1745
« on: Monday 12 September 11 12:19 BST (UK) »
My 4x gr grandfather Duncan VASS was born c 1766 in Inverness per the baptism records of his 6 children all born in Newcastle between 1792 and 1807 .
I have not been able to trace him prior to these births.
There is however a Duncan VASS baptised in Inverness on 29 Aug 1745.

"David VASE(or VAUSE) officerand his Spouse Jean Cumming had a child baptised by Mr Mc Bean called (Duncan) Duncan Fraser of Achnagairn, Dun.Fraser Son to Provost Fraser, Duncan Clark Mercht Wels."

What kind of officer could he be- Militia perhaps? Could he be related to my Duncan VASS as this seems to be an unusual combination of first and surnames.

I have also found a Duncan VASS who married in 1818 in Gateshead ans was wondering if perhaps he was my Duncan who had remarried.

Irene, Vass is a common enough name in the Seaboard Villages of Ross-shire. Hilton, Balintore & Shandwick. I believe it comes off the Clan Ross.
Try   http://www.talkingscot.com/forum/     and type sandy vass in the search box.

I know VASS is fairly common but it is the combination of VASS with the name Duncan that is not .

I think that in this instance it's more likely that he was a Church officer or a Sherriff Officer (highly likely given the Provost being a witness), but perhaps not. Usually, where I've seen military men in the parish records, it tends to mention their regiment. I have Vass ancestors also at Hilton of Cadboll in Fearn, Ross-shire.

Hi All

Not sure if this helps as I can't connect it with anything as yet...These links (I've shrunk both as they are long), look to be from the Edinburgh marriage registers:

There is a mention here of a David Vass:
David Vass, merchant in Inverness 9 Dec. 1786
www.rootschat.com/links/0f0l/

There looks to be this entry from IGI:
Mary Vass (father David) married Alexander McGregor on 9 Dec. 1786 in Edinburgh Parish

This Mary might be the Mary christened by David and Jean (Cuming) VASS on 8 July 1747 in Inverness.

Also here, likely a further marriage entry. Not sure if different family:
...Mary ; David Vass, clerk 17 May 1798
www.rootschat.com/links/0f0k/

Can't easily see a refence to this on IGI.

Reference here to a David Vass, paymaster of the Berwickshire Militia from c. 1814 www.rootschat.com/links/0f0m/  Mmm....too late perhaps to be the David Vass having children mid-1740/50s?

Thanks folks.

Monica,
The marriage of Mary VASS with father David looks a possibility although Mary would then be 39 which seems rather old for a first marriage.

I have had a look at the reference for David VASS in 1814 & 1822. There is a reference to him being at Tynemouth Barracks which I find quite interesting as my VASS family were in the Newcastle area then .

Hello Irene,
Yes, I agree there only seems to a record of one Duncan Vaus/Vass.
Hello,
I'd very much like to exchange info about this family; do get in touch.
Regards,
Jamie.

Hi Irene,

I too am related to Duncan Vass (5th Great-Grandfather) and am having trouble finding his birth/baptism record.

Have you had any luck since posting?

Thanks
Kez
