Benjamin Davies - Llandebie burial records, newspapers
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 10:36 BST (UK) »
I was wondering where I would find burial records for the Llandebie area, or newspaper reports from the late 1880s. I am searching for the death of Benjamin Davies, born 16 Dec 1841, who died sometime between 1876 and 1881. He is down on his son's Charles' christening records in 1876, but his wife Sarah is widowed in the 1881 census - she is living at Railway Gate, llandebie with her four children, and is the gate keeper.

Benjamin was a platelayer. We were told that he was killed on the railway line whilst checking the track, so would like to see if we can find any information about the incident. Any pointers where to look would be welcome.

I've found 2 possible death entries for Benjamin DAVIES:-
1876 Carmarthen 11a 482 Jun Qtr aged 34
1878 Carmarthen 11a 474 Dec Qtr aged 36
If you approach GRO for a copy death certificate, just request the name, Carmarthen & stating year 1877.  Also includes wifes name if known.
GRO will search 1877 and each year either side, so you should strike lucky.
Failing that, they will refund your £9.25
HARVEY, Guiting Power, Glos
PORTER, Gunmakers of Whitechapel
ALLEN - Blockley, BOWLES - Notgrove, BURROWS - Sevenhampton, COOK - Notgrove, DRINKWATER-LUNN - Aston Cross, FARDON - Temple Guiting, FAULKNER - Cheltenham, GADEN, GAYDEN, GAYDON, GRINHAM - Cheltenham, HART - Stow-on-the-Wold, LANE - Staverton, MOABY - Coln St Aldwyns, STAITE - Temple Guiting, TIMBRELL - Winchcombe, TYSOE - Warks & Glos, WHITFORD - Stanway, WINTLE - Forest of Dean, WYNNIATT - Stanway

Thank you very much for finding those entries, so hopefully it should be one of them. It's good to know I can verify it with the wife's name, instead of having to order both certificates.

Am new to the Welsh side of researching so not too aware of the areas and districts yet, so wasn't sure where to start.

There is only a 50 year old of that name in the accidents in the Cambrian Index so unlikely to be him.

Cambrian    F59    DISASTERS AND ACCIDENTS, OTHER ACCIDENTS    24 May 1878    INQUEST RE DEATHS OF BENJAMIN DAVIES, 50, & ALEXANDER GRIFFITHS, 16, OF PONTARDAWE TINPLATE WORKS. P8

If you find the correct date of death though, there might be something in the Carmarthenshire papers that someone can check for you.
Ambrose; Llandilofawr, Pennsylvania.
Grindley; Llandilofawr, Ohio, Louisiana, Washington DC.
Rees(e); Pennsylvania.
Lewis, Llandilofawr.

Yes, fingers crossed there'll be a mention of the incident somewhere. Thank you for the reply and the information though. The manner of his death was known by family, but not the year. Will have to get onto those death entries, and hopefully it will take me onwards a bit.  :)

Hello  :)

"In memory of Benjamin Davies, Station House, Llandybie who died July 23 1877 aged 35
Prepare in time, make no delay, Accidental death took me away .
Also Sarah wife of the above named who died August 28 1921 aged 88 years.
Her work was done so God took her home"

Llandybie MIs by Geoffrey Anderson, 2008

Most likely death is Llandilofawr volume 11a page 409 although it gives age of 33, unless he died away from County  :-\

Kind Regards
Morgan

Morgan that's fantastic, thank you for taking the time to find that out. We didn't know the exact year his wife Sarah had died either, as again there were too many possible entries, and wasn't sure of the area she was in, so the inscription solves that too.

Thanks again for all the help

Ann  :)

Hello Ann  :)

It also says that these were buried in the same plot:
Rees Phillips d June 5 1931 age 63, Jane his wife d March 29 1953 age 81, and
their daughter Sarah Ellen Pamela wife of Ernest Branch d Feb 25 1984 age 80

Jane is the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah. She was age 9 on 1881 Census
RG11 Piece 5391 Folio 102 Page 8

She married Rees Phillips in 1897 (Dec quarter)
Llandilofawr volume 11a page 1661

Llandilofawr is the registration district for Llandybie, and you can order certificates from either Llanelli or Carmarthen register offices (as well as GRO).

Kind Regards
Morgan

So it was a family plot, that's great. You've managed to take us forward a couple of generations in one step. Can't thank you enough for all the information. My cousin was trying to find Benjamin's death for a while, so will be thrilled with all this. Will have to get on with the certificates now... :)
