James Souter, Peeblesshire, Scotland died WW1
« on: Thursday 05 May 05 23:20 BST (UK) »
I am researching the names on the Roll of Honour  for Newlands Parish in Peeblesshire.  I have drawn a complete blank on one name for WW1 - James Souter - MGC, Royal Scots.  I have checked CWGC, local census record etc but found absolutely nothing.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Evelyn,  I got this from a book. Many records for the 1st WW were destroyed during 2nd WW. The surviving records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks are at TNA. They are known as the "burnt" documents and relate to soldiers who died and those who survived to be demobbed. The records are on microfilm in series WO 363, this list notes the range of names that appear on each film. There are over 29,000 reels of film, almost 3,500 of them for men with surnames beginning with the letter S.
I still have the book if you need any more ideas about how to find this man.
Regards Sheldon.

Hello Mack
Thanks for taking the time to reply.  I have the details for William Soutar - he is listed on the West Linton Roll of Honour. ( West Linton is about 3 miles from Newlands.)  There was a Book of Remembrance published in 1923 and I know that there is a copy in the Scottish Borders Archives.  I really need to make the time to do travel there and have a look at it.  The old local newspapers are there too so I should be able to come up with something.
