Chorlton Union Workhouse Burial Ground
« on: Wednesday 14 September 11 11:36 BST (UK) »
The Burials which were Re-interred in Southern Cemetery from Chorlton Union Workhouse/Withington Hospital have their own Memorial.  On visit to Southern Cemetery I took a photo and thought to add here for those wishing to have a photo of their Ancestors burial place for their Family tree.

The Flat stone in the centre reads:

Here And In The Surrounding Graves Lies The Remains Of Some Of Those Formerly Buried Within The Grounds Of Withington Hospital. Re-Interred 1971 and May 1985.

The Upright stones do have some names on them and their age.  I will add them here when I have them all, as some are below soil level.

Records Available to view at Manchester Library regarding the Workhouse:

Birth registers, 1857-1902. Death registers, 1857-Sep. 1892.
Death registers, Sep. 1892-Nov. 1927
Death registers, Nov. 1927-1949. Birth registers, 1902-1920.
Creed registers, 1869-1880
Creed registers, 1880-Oct. 1898

Popped to library after work and took a look at the Burials registers for Southern Cemetery.

Church of England Section 1985 they started on the 15 January, 16th, 17th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 29th, 30th, 31st, then again on 14th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 25th February.  There was a total of 68 boxes with Grave numbers M3808, 3954, 4100, 4246, 4392, 4538, and 4684.

RC Burials from the Workhouse started on February 28th, March 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 18th, 19th, May 9th.  There were  a total of 76 boxes.  They can be found in the FF Section of the Cemetery, numbers 2144, 2074, 2004, 1934, 1864, 1794, 1654, 1584, 1514, 1444, 1374, 1304, 1234, 1164, 1094, 954.

Will add picture of RC Site/Place soon.

There was no service held for any boxes that were interred.
Which is a disgrace really, considering they moved them from what they believed was their final resting place.  R.I.P.

Manchester Library holds the Burials records for Southern Cemetery which can be viewed on microfilm and a photocopy of the page can be made for 50p

These two photo's are in the M Church of England Section.

Whilst searching recently through the Burials Records of the Chorlton Workhouse                                               (available to search at Manchester Library or Find My Past)

and checking them on the Manchester Burials Website

(re-checking the actual burials registers - incase of a possible transcription error)

I noticed that if you were an inmate you didn't get entered into the Burials Registers at the Cemeteries,  but if you were listed with a home/house address the people who died in the workhouse (which could mean also the Infirmary/hospital) they are listed in the Burials Registers.

Though I imagine there could possibly be the odd one entered??

This could explain why many ancestors are not found?

As promised, below is a photo of the RC Re-Interments in Southern Cemetery in the Roman Catholic  FF section. They have been placed at the end of each row, next to the Path/Road in the Cemetery.  Again there was No Service held when the boxes containing the remains were interred.

Sadly there is no memorial stone, we are going to contact the Council or the Friends Group At Southern to see if there is anything they can do to rectify this.

They start at the bottom of the picture all the way passed the wooden planks on the ground, passed the flat board behind those and passed the what looks like a black dot to where you see the next Black Gravestone (there are only two Black Gravestones along the line at the top of the row.)
(this railing is not permanent, so if visiting don't expect to see it)
