John Webster Burial
« on: Thursday 15 September 11 18:16 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the burial of a John Webster, age 28,  who died Sept quarter 1891 Brighton district.

My ancestors full name was John Gandy Webster, b. 1862,  and I am wondering if this could be the same person.   I have been unable to find the death for John Gandy Webster.  He was working as a railway guard at the time of the 1891 Census.  He had previously worked for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway so I am wondering if he had been working for them again in 1891 and died while at work.    I can find nothing for him on the Railway Records on Ancestry for this time period.

Any help would be appreciated.

Marie.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I think the 1891 death is more likely to be that of John Webster b 1863 Stony Stratford Bucks who was living in Brighton in 1891 with wife Sarah & son Frederick - his occ was Tailor

There is an 1890 marriage in Somerset for a John Gandy Webster - is it the same one?

1891 shows him living in Fulham aged 28 b Wandsworth  wife is Jane E  aged  28 b Somerset (Jane Elizabeth Ash)

Jane is a widow in 1901 and remarried in 1907 to John Archibald Collen

Hi and thanks for your replies.

That is the same John Gandy Webster.   We know that he must have died between 1891 and 1901 but I have been unable to find any death record for him.   We know he was working as a railway porter so was hoping that this was him.   Most family trees on Ancestry have him as dying in 1897 but there is no documentation for this.  I've looked at the LMA burial records but have found nothing there.

So will have to keep looking.

Thanks for your interest.  Would be glad to hear if you have any other suggestions for where to look.

Regards.

Marie.

Do any of the family trees give a date of death in 1897 or a place of death?

None give either date or place of death - just the year 1897.

I have just checked the full GRO index for the whole of 1897 and there is no match to his age or his middle name

I've done lots of checks too and found nothing.  Even in other years  there is not much that fits his age, with or without his second name\initial.   In  the past I have seen a couple outside the London area but have no idea if it could be him.  Maybe his death wasn't registered.

This is a total longshot but it happened in my own FH.  However - I'm not saying it was the case here, just a thought

I had a great aunt who married and had 2 children - the youngest in 1886.

She re-married in 1888 as a widow but I could not find a death for her first husband or any subsequent census entries.

Many years later I made contact with somebody researching the husbands side of the family and found he had gone to the USA in 1886 to join his wife's brother - the intention being that his wife and family would join him after the birth.  Unfortunately, he died in a smallpox epidemic in Philadelphia only five weeks after the birth of his daughter
