photos of the gentry of county clare 1860-1920?
« on: Friday 16 September 11 17:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for a photograph of Joseph Hall and his wife Ellen (nee Bindon). Joseph was a Justice of the Peace in Ennis, County Clare from around 1860 until his death in 1907.  Ellen survived him by 10 years. They lived in a large estate called Clooney, and  I'm assuming that they would have mixed with their wealthy neighbours.  I can't find any photos of them in the Clare library online resources, and apparently photos didn't appear in newspapers until later. I'm hoping that someone may have an idea of where else I might try. They had no children. Joseph's family was in northern Ireland. I don't know much about Ellen's  family except that she had a sister Elizabeth who married a Singleton.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

Have you seen the article below, which names Burton Bindon as father of the lady who married Joseph Hall:-

http://www.reocities.com/Heartland/Woods/6322/History/cloony.htm

There is at least one Bindon headstone in Kiltenanlea Parish Church graveyard in Clonlara where the Bindons apparently ran a bleach-mill.  This headstone belongs to Charles Massy Bindon (died 1851), infant son of Samuel and Susan Bindon.

Samuel and Susan later emigrated to Australia.

Cheers

Died on or about 7th March 1890 at Clooney. Granted 11th ASpril 1890 at Dublin to Elizabeth Singleton of Clooney, the widow, the relict (during widowhood), the sole executrix. Personal Estate in England £2935.

Wonder if he is connected to your Elizabeth Sngleton, given the above. May be coincidence.
If so, there might be a connection to John Singleton Copley, the painter:

One of Ellen's ancestors?

The Burton Bindon refered to in previous post  was in Clooney in 1818:

Hello again, thanks for your replies.

Burton Bindon was Ellen's father. He travelled to Melbourne with her and at least another Miss Bindon about 1850, they are referred to in the diary of Edward Snell who was on the same ship.

Ellen Bindon's sister Elizabeth married into the Singleton family. Elizabeth was staying  with Ellen and Joseph when the census was taken in 1901.

Ellen and Joseph Hall are fairly well documented on my ancestry tree.

Pastmagic -  I can't find the photos you refer to in this ancestry tree.  Could you give me more details?
Cheers,
Cathy

Some good 1880's photos of Joseph and Ellen's relatives.

What a fabulous set of photographs! Just beautiful!
I hope one day to find one just like that of Joseph and Ellen Hall, so I will try to follow the trail as you suggest.
Thanks for your advice,
Cathy

Thanks, I really appreciate your interest!

The Bindons of the 19th century  are interesting and a bit mysterious - I have not found much info on the generation of Burton Bindon (Ellen"s father) and his (so far anonymous) wife. Burton Bindon was forced to sell Clooney in the encumbered estates, and travelled to Australia with Ellen in 1850. Ellen and her new husband Joseph bought the house back soon after their return to Ireland a year later.

I've not found a contact for Frank Tracy yet, so if you are able to find an address I'd be very grateful.

Cheers,
Cathy
