Axbridge Academy c1805 - 1813
« on: Saturday 17 September 11 21:10 BST (UK) »
The obituary in the Salisbury & Winchester Journal in August 1813 of my 4xG grandfather, GEORGE TIVERS, stated  he was " master of a respectable Academy at Axbridge, Somerset."  Does anyone know where this was/is?  Where would the records be if any survive?  Would he have had to be licenced to be a schoolmaster in the early 1800s?

I also found online on Google Books a couple of mentions of him which state he was at Axbridge Academy in 1805 & 1806, although another in 1806 states he is from Lymington (Hampshire?).

On his marriage (1 October 1810 at Winchester, Hampshire, to Mary Ann Gaiger, nee Carter) it states he was "of Lymington" but I haven't yet found any reference to any TIVERS in that area.  In fact, George is the earliest instance of the name I can find anywhere.  I can't find his birth which, from his age at death, should be around 1777.
He was buried at St John the Baptist in Axbridge on 17 July 1813.

I'd be very grateful for any help or advice please.

I'm sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I'm still finding my way around this great site  :-\

Thank you for that info Dragongirl.  I'd never considered a previous marriage.  :-[  Where did you find that marriage between George & Catherine Fearncombe?  I think on George's marriage to Mary Ann Gaiger it stated she was a widow, but he was a bachelor, I'll have to check.  I'm on my laptop at the moment so will check when I get back home to my records.

There are families named TIVER (without the S) in North Petherton, Somerset in the 1700s, but George is the first I've found with an 'S' at the end.  I also found a George TIVER burial in 1758 in Middlezoy, Somerset on LDS site.  I've also found the name spelt TYVER, also in Somerset, but not sure there is a connection.

I usually put in "Variations" when searching a name some weird answers come up but think a lot are just Accent and pronounceation problems'
