I am trying to trace the parents of George Potter born 1823/24 died Stansfield Suffolk 1847.  I have his fathers name as John Potter from Georges marriage in Parish records but have come to a blank about John

Any help would be much appreciated  :)

Hello john

This is a long shot but it might add up.

Did your George marry Mary Walker in 1844?  If so it looks like Stansfield was her home village as there is a Mary Walker born c1826 living in Stansfield in 1841.

I have found a John Potter 55 & Hannah 50 living in Clare in 1841 with sons John 14 & James 12.  There is a George Potter 15 living with another family in Hawkedon at the same time.

On Familysearch the bpt of a George Potter is recorded on 30 Jun 1822 in Rede, Suffolk, parents John & Hannah Potter.  Rede is just north of Stansfield & Hawkedon is somewhere in between.  I also found a Non Conformist record on the same site for James son of John & Hannah 25/9/1829 Clare.  Could be the same family - Clare is not that far south of Stansfield.

I found this marriage on the Suffolk Marriage Index
John POTTER m Hannah CANT 24 Apr 1820 Poslingford (just south of Stansfield)

How you prove a link is another matter - were there any children from the short marriage?

John

Could this be a link?  In 1841 Mary Walker seems to have been with her parents in Stansfield - Thomas & Mary Walker.  In 1851 the same couple (Thomas & Mary Walker) have a John Potter age 26 living with them.  He is described as grandson but that would be impossible as Thomas didn't marry Mary until 1820 so the best he could have been, if he was related, would have been something like a nephew or perhaps son in law.

Thomas Walker of Stansfield married Mary Perry on 17 Sep 1820 in Cavendish

It is quite a coincidence that their daughter Mary married George Potter & they have a John Potter of the right age to be his brother living with them in 1851?

Is there any connection to one of my direct relations William Potter born 1778 Braisworth, Suffolk who was married to a Sarah (Poss Sarah Larkam b1774 East Carlton). I believe he was the son of another William Potter who was married to an Elizabeth Herring. The family may also have connections to Carlton Colville, Suffolk.

The family then went to live and breed rapidly in Tivetshall in Norfolk circa 1800.

PS  Has anyone got knowledge ofa site that gives free access to Suffolk parish records. IGI has them all for Norfolk but I cannot find any for Suffolk.
Potter - Norfolk
Bailey - Devon
Ridley & Robinson - Durham
