Rycroft cemetery Walsall Staffordshire
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 14:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I have traced back to find that I have a grandfather and a great grandfather buried in Rycroft cemetery Walsall, I have details of the sections and grave numbers were they are buried but its impossible to locate the graves from these details as few graves have numbers. I have spoke to Walsall bereavement services who emailed me a plan of the cemetery showing the sections only but what I need is a plan of grave numbers, information that they tell me they don't give out. I have also visited the local history centre who have very little info on grave locations, they have a couple of A4 sheets that have been given to them by people that have somehow managed to obtain these details. Would any one have a grave plan of sections 48 and 49 that I could have a look at please. Walsall bereavement services did suggest that if I visited the cemetery during the week someone may be there working who could show me the grave, unfortunately during the week I'm 55 miles away working so can only get there during a weekend. I have the same problem a couple of weeks ago I traveled to Coventry in an attempt to find my other grandfathers grave in the London Road cemetery, first I visited the Coventry history centre and paid for a photocopy of a grave plan only to find that due to the sheer size of the cemetery the plan was near to useless it again was impossible to pin point the location without seeing more of the plan and by this time the history centre was closed. My point to all this is why on earth don't cemetery's mount a grave plan within the cemetery so that people trying to locate a grave have half a chance of finding it, perhaps that's to simple..

Have you tried contacting walsall family history society? If you google it you should find contact details, they may also be a link from walsall archives site but i don't know for sure. Some of these societies can be extremeley helpful. I have relatives whose ashes were scattered on the memorial garden there plus a couple of people buried there but have n't looked for those yet. Mom kows where they are and i will look for their reference when i go to walsall archives hopefully next week. I presume the reason why some won't give info out about the plot and grave numbers is that some of the plans have loads of other peoples names on. Some do give out a plan but  only section letters and some graveyards i've been to do have these inside. It's no help when you can't relate these to numbers though!

As I said in my post I have visited the local history centre who have no information regarding grave numbers other than a couple of A4 sheets showing small areas of the cemetery with grave numbers shown, these few pages have been donated by people who have managed to get hold of them someway. Also they have limited info on grave spaces, there records end in 1902, well short of when the cemetery closed but this may be due to some regulations however the girls in the Willenhall lawn cemetery office who now hold the records for all of Walsalls cemetery's are very helpful and will tell you who is buried in a grave if you give them the grave number and date of burial

The family history society  is n't run from the local history centre.  The reason i suggested them is that maybe they may be able to help if anyone else has researched a family member and may be they've had info donated to them by members or may be have a useful contact. I know some people get some pages with plot number and row number with loads of plots and names on together with a layout of the cemetry with identifiable features on! It depends on the area and their contacts etc. I've not used walsall family history society though. I'll bear that in mind about willenhall though as i go past from time to time.
