regiments stationed at Fortwilliam 1780s,
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 09:08 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out the names of any regiments stationed at Fortwilliam in the 1780s/1790s. I can trace a family tree to a person who was the "Keeper of Stores" in the 1780s at Fortwilliam  and his children's baptisms at Kilmallie but I don't know which regiment he was in.

Could anyone point me in the right direction to get an answer

thanks

Have you tried the regimental museum at Fort George (based in Inverness, which isn't that far away)?

Others will probably know of others, but the only reg I know of in the area were the Cameron Highlanders (79th Regiment).

Ann
thanks fro your reply. i'll try as you suggest.
My wife's gggg" whatever "was William Cleaver. He married in England in 1770 and, I think was "posted" to Fortwilliam, where when his children were born in the late 1780s.(I have copies of their baptism records from Kilmallie Church.  In those,  he was listed as Storekkeper.

thanks

John, the Cameron's weren't founded until 1793. There's the West Highland Museum in Fort William which might help.    http://www.westhighlandmuseum.org.uk     Skoosh.
