« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 17:08 BST (UK) »
Hi ,
I have this photo of my grandmother(deceased) Robina Clunie McInnes(nee Ross) Abt middle to late 1950's.
I'm Guessing it the Liberton area as that is where she was staying. possibly a gala or flower show? ???

Any Idea's  :)

print no N1717/8080  Edinburgh Evening News.

Is there a way to search the papers on line?

Thanks

Hi mcstrings

The Scotsman has an online archive, but I've never seen one for the News.

It may be worth e-mailing the Evening News quoting the reference number that you have for the photo. They may be able to date it and find the article for you.

Could have been Gilmerton or Moredun Gala, both areas were into all this, I have never heard of Liberton having one.

Cheers.

Archie.

Hi - almost certainly a gala -  probably Moredun Gala. I was the gala queen in, I think, 1957. I have looked at the photos I have and the crown looks like the same one lol. Although it was called the Moredun Gala the crowning took place in the grounds of Ferniehill School. There were races down beside Mickie's? Burn at Little France and a dance in Fernieside School at night.  Happy days!  Sorry I can't give you more information about your grandmother

Hi mcstrings,

I live across the road from the old Moredun Community Centre ( Hut ), I have just remembered that they have some Gala Queen photos on their wall, I will check them out this week.

If it was the Gilmerton Gala then the celebrations would have been held in the old Society Hall Building in Gilmerton Village, all the other celebrations would be in the Gilmerton Park behind the Society Hall.

Cheers.

Archie.

Thanks to all replies  :)

Got an email from The Evening News  >:( They are not able to help me .

(The newspapers for that time have not yet been digitised and we do not
have any index to trace the reference number of the photo.

The only way of searching these papers is by searching through them via
microfilm)

Hi,
I was asking a friend who belongs the Gilmerton area about gala days. She recognized your granmother as being the wife of the local doctor who resided in the Northfield area of Liberton.
In the 1950s Moredun held gala days my friend actually took part in one but not this one.
Apparently in the Saturday edition of "Evening News " there is a  "Can you help" column why don't you ask in it if any one can remember who your gran crowned. Worth a try.
There is another site www.edinphoto.org.uk the owner of the web site Peter Stubbs  is very helpful I have contacted him a few times regarding
photos on his site there is also a guestbook you could write in that people from all over the world are "guests" talking about their childhoods in Edinburgh.
Won't do any harm and worth a try.
Good luck.
Remember and let us know how you get on
