Electoral Rolls
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 19:39 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to electoral rolls for Yorkshire for the years 1897, 1903 and 1906.  I have birth certs for my grandmother and two of her brothers and I would like to check to see the name of the person living at the addresses given on the birth certs as I think there may possibly be a 'name change/alias' for the parents.  I have my grandmothers brother Ernest Gilbert born December 1897 fathers name Harry Gilbert, address 4 Sydney Street, another brother Harry Gilbert born February 1903 fathers name Harry Gilbert, address 3 Garfield Terrace, York and my grandmother Lily Gilbert born January 1906, fathers name Ernest Gilbert, address Long Lane, Harlow Hill, Harrogate.  I can find no trace of the family in the 1901 census but have found them on the 1911 census when they are living in Dublin Ireland.  My grandmothers birth cert is the only certificate that the fathers christian name is Ernest.  I would be very interested to see if he is listed on the electoral rolls under either Ernest or Harry.  Any advice regarding further research into the family would be really gratefully received

Prior to 1918 and the introduction of universal sufferage there were no Electoral Rolls.  There was voters lists  - you had to be an house owner or rate payer to qualify and judging from Harry's job and the number of dwellings lived in - It is debatable whether he would be on the lists.

Thats a shame - I thought I was onto something with the electoral rolls - I don't think I will ever solve the mystery.  Thanks for info though it will save me going on a wild goose chase

Harrogate is in North Yorkshire..if you post your query there...you may have better luck...someone may have access to Trade Directories.

Hi,

Think I have found another sibling for you!

On the 18 Oct 1903, there were two baptisms at St Marks, Harrogate:

Ernest - date of birth 9 December 1897
Annie  - date of birth 14 May 1898

Parents were Harry & Lizzie Gilbert, occupation of father labourer, abode - 12 Cromwell St, Oaklands.

Sadly, there is a death registration in the Harrogate District for an Annie Gilbert, aged 4 later on that year (Dec quarter 1903).

Interesting that these two children are baptised but I cannot find one for Harry born in February 1903, it is possible he was baptized in York - so why not the two older children!

You may like to have a look in the local reference library to see if they have street directories for the years you mention.

York reference library on Museum Street has street directories for the years around those you mention, I've used them to find out who lived at my house (which was built in 1880) for a house history project.

They are not strictly accurate as I believe they were taken from post office records, so they tend to list people from the year after they moved to an address and can be a year out at the end.

Might be worth a try though.

Cheers
Paul

Hi,

I noticed that there were only 5 months difference between the two dates of birth, have checked the baptism records (they are on A******y), and the dates are correct.  But either Annie's was incorrectly given or written down.

There is a birth entry in 1899 for Annie, which I am sure will be your girl.

Have also checked the 1901 records for 3 Garfield Terrace and 4 Sydney Street, sadly to no avail.  :(

This is a long shot, but there is a marriage for a Harry P Gilbert to Lilian Scollick in 1929 at St Martin cum Gregory Church, York.

I have looked for children with a mothers maiden name of Scollick (and variants) and haven't found any.

If this was your great grandfather, then there is the possibilty of fathers details and emergence of a new initial!  You may be fortunate if you asked on Roots for the possibility of someone looking up the parish record.
