Birth of Walter Dunk 1881
« on: Friday 23 September 11 13:49 BST (UK) »
Hello kind RootsChatters,

I'm looking to find the parents of Walter Dunk who was born in Reading in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1881.

I believe he is the brother of my great grandmother, but he is missing from the 1891 census and away from home in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. I had always assumed he was related as all of the Dunks born in Reading between 1880 and 1896 are siblings, however a recent discovery of one of the brothers attestation forms doesn't have him listed as a sibling, and this aroused my suspicions. This may simply be because he wasn't living with their parents at the time, and besides the younger brother Stanley is missing from the form and a very clearly written sister Susan in his place, so maybe the form isn't to be too trusted!

If anyone could take a quick peek and see who his parents are that would put my mind at ease! I've never found what happened to Walter after 1911, so it'd be nice to at least erase his parentage from my list of queries!

Thank you in advance.

..at ?

I'll have a look on the censuses for him, but it seems you have already done that.
Otherwide you will need to buy the birth cert to find his parents.

DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk

Baptism records? I was hoping not to have to buy the birth certificate as it is quite expensive and he is not a very close relation.

But we dont know where (if) he was baptised - Reading Reg District will cover lots of parishes.

In the meantime I have found him in 1891 for you(not that it finds his parents! Grrrr)

True. Oh well. I suppose it will remain a mystery for now. Maybe when I win the lottery I shall buy his birth certificate!

Thank you very much for finding him in the 1891 census. I'd failed to find him then so this is much appreciated, though I've no idea what he was doing with James and Amelia Davis in Thatcham.

It does look rather likely that he was a son of Edwin and Emily (nee Rosier) DUNK, who were the only family by that name in the Reading area.

I see that Edwin was an "inmate" in the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 1891 and died a few years later.  Have you found Emily and the other children in that census? Perhaps Emily, facing hardship, entrusted young Walter into the care of others and he never grew up in the family? (Of course one cannot tell this from the snapshots of a census every 10 years, but it might explain why a brother didn't include him in a list of siblings...)

Edited: now found Emily and six children in 1891: RG12 piece 998 folio 46 page 4.  I must say it would be odd if just Walter had been brought up outside the family - Emily had kept having children through the 1880s so Edwin can't have been hospitalised all that long. ???

Walter Dunks birth was registered in the St Giles sub-district

http://www.berkshirebmd.org.uk/index.php

but Ive looked through the Ex BFHS St Giles, St Marys,  St Laurence & Greyfriars PRs & sorry to say no Walter

Looking at the marriages on berksbmd there was a Marriage at Reading St John the Evangelist & St Stephen of an Edwin Dunk to an Emily Rosier 1879, so may be this was the church if he was baptised and may be these are his folks

btw I have a Hilda Emily Margaret  Dunk b.1907 on my Chandler Tree

Thank you for your replies.

Interesting idea that Walter may have been brought up outside the family, avm228. It is certainly odd that he is the only one who is not at home in 1891. Maybe he was a difficult child! The father, Edwin, died in Hastings, Sussex from pernicious aneamia and it has 1 1/2 years in brackets. Edwin's brother was present at the death and is the informant. I'm not sure why he'd returned to Hastings, maybe just for a visit.

Yes, Paul, you're spot on - Edwin Dunk and Emily Rosier are the parents, and that is them marrying at St John's Church. Thanks for the link to the website as I'd not seen it before.
And re: Hilda Emily Margaret Dunk, she is the daughter of Ernest, who was Edwin and Emily's 4th son. Fancy that! I have her marrying Victor Alexander Waldeck in 1933, but no record of any children.

Hi Panoply

Victor Alexander Waldeck was according to my Family tree programme my 3rd Cousin twice removed or  to put it another way;
Victors mum Edith Mary Waldeck nee Chandler was my  GGGG Grandfather John Chandlers younger brother Edwin's granddaughter  so not that closely related

I  haven't found any children from this union either
