Obituary for death in Ely 1st March 1962.

Hi everyone,

I need to ask firstly if I can put my relative's name in this post, as he only died in 1962?  He wife is also deceased.
He is my great uncle's son, and was a Civil Engineer, working in Nigeria and Ghana through the 1940's & 1950's, so I think he led quite an interesting life.  I have found some records of his journeys.  I  sent for his death cert and he was only 50 when he died.  He died in the R.A.F. Hospital in Ely and at the time of his death, he was living in Prickwillow Road with his wife.

I would like to try and find an obituary for him in the local newspaper, as I had hoped that it might give more details of his career.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

You just might find something by googling, I found an entire life-history once, simply because I came across a memorial notice for my Mum's cousin in the local paper - I knew he lived not far from me but had never got in touch.  His widow had been putting an annual notice in the paper for years but this was the first time I'd seen it.  It gave his date of death and I found an obituary online from the magazine of the company he worked for,  as well as memorial notices placed in his sister's church, all online.

Alternatively, as you know when he died you could email the relevant library/archives and ask if they could search and provide you with a copy of any obits.

Hi Jeuel,  Sorry for the late reply, I have been away.  I emailed Cambridge library and they have searched the Ely Standard, but not found an obit or a death notice even.  I did try googling his name, but unfortunately nothing came up.  However, Cambridge library have put me in touch with the Institute of Civil Engineers, so I am going to contact them and ask if they have archives for employees and see if I can get some details of his career from them.

If you want to put the name here, that's ok. His death was 50 years ago.

The moderating team are more concerned in removing death details for more recent family bereavements that might cause an upset if discovered online.

Thanks for that!  I am never sure and don't want to break the rules and upset people.

Here goes - his name is Denis Whitney, and he was born 2nd August 1911 at the School House, Wotton, near Dorking.
He died on 1st March, 1962 in Ely, Cambridgeshire, age 50.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have spoken about Denis before on Rootschat.   My memory is not all that it was!  I didn't realise that you could do a search on here, to see what you had posted before, although I hadn't asked before about an obituary.  I will check the 'search facility' in future.

No, I have not sent for Denis's will.  I think I will do that, just to see if he actually left one.  I have previously sent for his father's and brother's will, but they both died intestate.

Do you need any more details, other than I have given?  The house number in Prickwillow Road, was 32 and his wife's name was Nora Francis.
