George COOMBS
« on: Sunday 25 September 11 12:29 BST (UK) »
I am interested in George Coombs, born abt 1854, Winsome, Somerset who was a boarder at Wyke Farm Cottages in Sherborne, Dorset in the household of John Butler, farm bailiff on the 1881 census.  George’s occupation listed as Farm Servant Engine Driver.  Could someone please help locate him on the 1871 aged about 18 years.

The only one that I can see is George Coombs aged 18 as a Farm Labourer but having been born in North Cheriton Somerset. Winsome is actually Winscombe but I can see no George listed on any of the other censuses having been born in Winsome(Winscombe)

Thanks for the details; many a time place of birth can give the searcher headaches, I've had George listed as being born in Devon and Somerset and now as you pointed out Winsome becomes  Winscombe ::)  I wonder if you could follow your entry up on the 1861, could be some clues there for me to work on.

Hope this helps.

Is Coombs spelt the correct way, as it could be Coombes.

Hi
Thanks for the details.  I appreciate the spelling should be with a 'e' but I've learnt over the years to transcribe as I actually read the doc.
Cheers, Roy

Hi Midase
Thanks for the 1871 & 1861 details, can I be a nuisance and ask for the address where they were residing at the time.  Can I also ask for help in locating Jonathan & Mary and George on the 1851 and if possible the 1841.

Thanks for your help
Roy

1871 they were in North Cheriton. The address looks like 10 Gales Cottages

In 1861 they were in North Cheriton The Address looks like 45 Gatehouse Cottage

George will not be on the censuses for 1851 and 1841 as he was not born!

Now 1851. Coombes is spelt with the 'e' and you have Jonathan and Mary and Daughters Caroline aged 18, Jane age 10, sons William age 8 and James age 3. The address says 37 North Cheriton.

In 1841 you have Jonathan and Mary (both ages as 25) Caroline (age8) and Jane (age 2) and the address is just given as Lower Cheriton.
