James Gray marriage Belford
« on: Sunday 25 September 11 17:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a record of marriage for a James Gray and Isabel(la) Fairington.  Her name could be McFarlane or ............?

James was born in Hawick and baptised in the presence of the Associate Congregation.    I understand that the United Associate Congregation (United Secession Church) in Belford is where Scottish dissenters went.

If James Gray was married there, it was in May of 1832 or May of 1833 just before emigrating to Canada.  The minister may have been John Hunter.

I would appreciate any help.  Thanks!!

Jan

Thanks, Steve,  I would say that word of mouth had left confusion and that what you found is correct even though your findings have an extra letter in Fairnington.  Only today, I suddenly realized Belford was in England!  May 13 1833 was a Monday.  The minister wrote the letter on a Tuesday.   I have wrestled with this for several weeks and you solved it in minutes!!

Jan :) :)

My grandmother wrote the following about her grandfather:

In May 1832, Jas. Gray was married on a Wednesday to Isabel McFarland.

But

a letter dated at Belford on May 14, 1833, shows the marriage year to be 1833 and the bride's name to be Fairington.  James had a note written by his minister:  This is to certify that James Gray, gardener, and Isabella Fairington, his wife, at this date leave the United Associate Congregation here, in full communion with the United Secession Church.  It is signed John Hunter, Belford, Tuesday, May 14, 1833.
