ultimate family tree incompatibility with windows 7
« on: Monday 26 September 11 22:16 BST (UK) »
Our new laptop with windows 7 displayed the following re the UFT:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a 32 bit or 64 bit version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

Fortunately we still have an XP from which we are copying things onto the windows 7, and a vista laptop, and the UFT works well on both of them.

If you want to run everything on your new computer follow this procedure 1. Download and install VM Ware player, this will creat a virtual 32 bit computer within your Windows 7. 2) Open the machine and use your XP installation disk and code to install XP on the virtual machine. 3) Instal and run your program. You will be able to connect all your disks and printer etc to the virtual XP machine. It almost takes longer to write than to do it.

My laptop is 64 bit. Remember if you create a virtual machine in VMware Player, it too will be 32 bit, and you will be asked which of your devices you want to connect to the machine. No driver installation to bother about, regarding xp mode for W7HP this has been discussed on here, I tried it it instals but is not reliable in my experience. That's why I went and stayed virtual, not only is it free and simple, but it saves approx £100.

Thank you. I really feel that as I have managed to copy folders and favourites to the windows 7 laptop from the XP, also imported the emails from outlook express, and made Lotus Smartsuite run on the new laptop, that I really ought to be able to use the UFT on it, too  :)

However, I am still slightly hesitating before having a go ... just checking what will happen:
the virtual machine would be 32 bit and I would be asked which device to be connected, so I say UFT?
Would the virtual machine cause problems when using the other programmes in the windows 7 laptop?

Yes, I did check how much it would cost to update to windows 7 professional, and I think the cheapest that I found was from Amazon and just under £70.

I seem to have made a mess of my explanation, so I will have another go. 1) Download and instal VMWare Player, which is the free version. The pay versions cost plenty. 2) Have your XP installation disk and code ready, then open VMWare player. You will see a menu which asks you what you want to do. Click create a new machine, and follow the instructions. When you have created your virtual XP machine you will be asked which of your devices you want to attach. You will certainly need your printer, and USB disks that you have attached, and any other device like possibly Bluetooth. You now have a virtual 32 bit XP machine, capable of running any program run by XP. Now instal your UFT program.

Apart from the devices you have connected to it, your virtual machine is "Sandboxed", isolated from your real computer, and cannot in my experience have any effects on it or programs it is running. Good luck, let's know how you go on with it.

Serious question - I'm looking to be educated, here!

Would it be possible to create an extra partition on the W7 hard drive, and install XP on this to make a "dual boot" machine?

The programs requiring W7 could be installed on the W7 partition, and "UFT" could be installed on the XP partition.

I know of no reason why not. My first laptop ran W98 alongside XP on a dual booting system without problems although the machine was optimised for XP. Really though one for the Techies to answer. To avoid these types of problem, and to have the ability to run almost any operating system I wanted was a major reason I installed VMWare player. On this 64 bit machine I currently run W7HP 64 bit plus in virtual mode XP pro. W98 which runs some ancient programs, and Ubuntu 11.04 and Android 2.3

No, you have given a very good explanation, but I am not very technologically minded  :)

Once a virtual XP machine has been created, and, say, I attach the device of the printer, and the USB disks if I knew what they were  ;) - I don't know Bluetooth - and then install the UFT,

I shall look up  "Sandboxed"  :)

And re

- thank you  :)
