John Dillon / Mary Welsh
« on: Sunday 05 June 05 18:41 BST (UK) »
My gggrandfather John Dillon, was born in Co Cavan in 1825, son of John Dillon and Mary Jane [nee Murphy] Dillon. He married Mary Welsh/Walsh in 1847 and came to theUSA in 1850-51. They settled on a farm in Sullivan Co, NY , His obit states that his family on both sides was prominently involved in the Revolution of 1798 . A tribute written upon his death states that he gave up his legacy and his wife's dowery when he left Ireland due to trying times. ........and that's it !! That's all I know about my ancestor.  Any help or leads will be greatly appreciated. I have a photo of the old gent and will be glad to share it with anyone who would like to see him.
Sincere wishes to all

Hello Ellen,

What denomination were John Dillon and Ellen Welsh? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or possibly Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
