Tillie P Anderton Carpenter of Queens, NY
« on: Wednesday 28 September 11 20:58 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on Tillie P. Anderton a.k.a. Matilda Carpenter, born abt 1848 in New York, wife of James Baylis Carpenter, Sr.. Her last whereabouts were in Jamaica, Queens, New York with her husband and infant son James B Carpenter Jr., born Jan 1870, in the 1870 US Census. She is buried in Prospect Cemetery in Jamaica, Queens. According to her gravestone she was 23 when she died on 19 Apr 1871, putting her age at 1848 which coincides with the 1870 census. I am unable to find her with any family in any prior census or record of any kind. There are Andertons in Newtown, Queens in 1850 but no Matilda and there are other families in New York but no Matilda still that I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless.

Tillie P. Anderton was born as Matilda Pewtner and was orphaned around 1852 as well as her sister Annie Elizabeth Pewtner and brother George Pewtner. Found the family here: http://www.archive.org/stream/delongsofnewyork00delo/delongsofnewyork00delo_djvu.txt Parents were George Pewtner and Annie Anderton. Matilda's maternal grandparents were William and Elizabeth Anderton and they became legal guardians of George and Annie's 3 children. Trying to find the family anywhere. Annie Elizabeth is well documented however Matilda and her brother George are not. It seems that Matilda and Annie Elizabeth were possibly born in Pennsylvania or New York according to census records. So maybe Matilda was in Pennsylvania and not New York in 1850? Thomas is Matilda's maternal uncle and took care of her for a time before she was married in 1869. Thomas came to New York by way of Liverpool in 1832 or 1839, before the Anderton family (except Annie) came to Newtown (Elmhurst) in 1841, William and Elizabeth along with their children Mary Ann, Joseph, Harriett, Matilda, Barbara and Elizabeth.  Any help would be appreciated. God bless.

Okay! Thank you! It would seem that Tillie P. Anderton was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania as Matilda Pewtner. Her father George Edward Pewtner born in Portsmouth, Hampshire to George Edward Pewtner Sr. and Esther Stone. He was married to Jemima Morris in Glamorgan, Wales  (don't know if she passed away or they divorced) and had one daughter with her according to the 1841 Wales census, Elizabeth born abt 1836, and she is with her father in Pennsylvania in 1850. The other family members I have not accounted for except George, born abt 1844. George Jr. is cited in "History of Northampton, Lehigh, Monroe, Carbon, and Schuylkill counties (1845)" as him being a native of Portsmouth, Eng. and living in Minersville.
I am trying to find records that lead me back to England and where Matilda's mother was born and how she made it to Pennsylvania herself with her husband. Because her family came to New York by way of Liverpool without her I have not run into anything thus far. Once again, any help would be appreciated. God bless.

Merjones,
Thomas Anderton immigrated in 1832 with his older brother William b 1814 and then somehow went back home and returned with, I believe, his brother David in 1839, who is listed as being from Northamptonshire. I think Mary Ann is Tillie P Anderton's mother because I finished sifting through the christening records on familysearch.org in Middleton-Cheney, Northamptonshire and "Annie", christened Mary Anne, and all of the family in the passenger list is found in the christening records, and David along with more siblings who lived in Newtown, Queens! Unfortunately can't find Thomas and his older brother William which could suggest that they were born elsewhere.

And... I found that George Pewtner, actually is George Edward Pewtner, Jr. who was born in Portsmouth, Hamptonshire, was married to Jemima Morris in 1833 and he immigrated with her to New York 11 Nov 1841 by way of Liverpool from Glamorgan, Wales. His daughter Elizabeth, born abt 1836 in Glamorgan, is found with him in Minersville, Pennsylvania. So somehow he must have lived near Newtown, Queens to meet Mary Anne "Annie." Jemima more than likely passed away between 1841 and 1844, which is around the time that his son George Edward III was born I believe in New York. Crazy huh? Sometime around 1845 the family moved to Minersville, Pennsylvania. George and Annie died in 1852 either in New York or Pennsylvania, a year after their daughter Annie Elizabeth was born, who married Joseph DeLong at the tender age of 15.

I am going to start a new topic in the England forum, but I am looking for Mr. William and Mrs. Elizabeth Anderton and extended family in Northamptonshire or elsewhere. Your help has been instrumental in getting things sorted. Thank you! Please let me know any more insights you have found. God bless.

Michelle
