Thames Ditton Parish Records
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 09:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

Could anyone help me find the missing piece of my jigsaw please?

I am looking for information about my gr x 5 grandmother.  Joseph Stanney - a Cooper from Thames Ditton - married Ann (possibly Maidman) and had two children - Mary Ann in 1787 and Louisa in 1788, both in Thames Ditton.

All of the above information has been verified through various sources such as wills, marriage details etc.

However, Ann remains a mystery.  I found a marriage between Joseph Stanney and Ann Maidman (on LDS site) on 30th April 1786 in Ewell, Surrey - I know he married an Ann from the baptism records of Mary and Louisa.

In 1814 he married Sarah Brightwell in Southwark. However, I can find no record of Ann's death and am not entirely convinced the marriage I found is correct - the name and dates fit but I'm still not confortable.

Is anyone able to help me locate Ann's death (likely to be in Thames Ditton) or an alternative marriage for a Joseph and Ann in Thames Ditton.

Any help as ever is much appreciated.

Thames Ditton has the following burials:

Mr Joseph Stanney  23 Jan 1825 aged 60

Richard Staney 2 Jul 1802 aged 40

There is also:

Ann Slanney (sic) 8 May 1814 aged 56.      I think this must be your Ann as there are no other Slanneys in the parish records.

The marriage banns in Aug/Sep 1814  for Joseph's marriage to Sarah Brightwell show him as a widower and she a spinster.

There is one other Stanney reference in Ewell registers:

Burial on 27 Mar 1793 of Mrs Mary Stanney from London.        An M.I. in Ewell churchyard appears to be her:  Mary Stanner (sic) 1793 aged 56.

Hi Brian

That great - thank you so much - certainly would appear to be Ann's burial details.  Joseph didn't hang around though, marrying his next wife on the 21st September the same year!

I wonder whether Mary could be Joseph's mother?

Thanks again for your help.

Very few widowers - or widows - hung around before remarrying.  Usually they needed childcare or an income or a roof over their heads.
