From Scotland to Canada
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 23:06 BST (UK) »
HI,
Any help advice will be appreciated; I have a lot to ask! :)

I have just linked ancestors to Canada. Through My 2xgrandfather Philip Read. I don’t no where to start as I have not really searched out of Scotland? I would like to locate certificates, find out where they stayed, where they were buried, and if any head stones are there. Can anyone help or point me in the right way?

Thank you

There is a passenger list for the Duchess of Atholl which departed from Greenock, Scotland and arrived in Quebec on 16 Sep 1932 which had Phoebe Alice Aird as a passenger. According to the passenger list, she was 55, born Leicester, England and had been in Canada from Sep 1911 to Jul 1932 in Almonte, Ontario. She indicated she was returning to her husband, William Aird in Almonte.

With that information, I was able to find Phoebe arriving in Quebec on the Grampian on 24 Sep 1911. It's difficult to read but the passenger list includes a note that she was to be married to Wm Aird. Here's a link to the passenger list at Library and Archives Canada (line 7):
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0fb9/

With her September arrival, Phoebe missed being on the 1911 Canada census by a few months. The 1921 census is not available at this time. If I recall correctly it will be released to the public in 2013 but it will take quite some time before transcriptions are available.

William Aird enlisted in the military for WWI. Here's a link to his attestation papers at Library and Archives Canada:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0fb8/
There is a link on that page with instructions on how to order a copy of the file.

Here's a link to the passenger list for the Cassandra which arrived in Quebec on 25 Sep 1910 with William Aird onboard (line 1):
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e143/e003566565.jpg

I have found William on the 1911 census in Chatham, Kent East, Ontario. Here's a link to the transcription and image:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=87809

In the Ontario births database at Ancestry I have found a birth for Janetta Bournsley MacCrone Aird (MacCrone is printed above Aird Janetta Bournsley on the registation) who was born in Chatham on 2 Oct 1912. Currently that database only goes to 1913. Births for 1914 have been released to the public but they have not been transcribed yet at the LDS site or added to Ancestry's database. Births from 1915 are in the process of being microfilmed by the Archives of Ontario while births from 1916 to present are currently protected by Ontario privacy laws. Ontario privacy laws also cover marriages from 1931 to present and deaths from 1941 to present.

If you PM me your email address I can send you copies of the marriage registration for William and Phoebe as well as Janetta's birth registration.

Hi,

The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid shows that William Aird, Alice Aird and Jean (Aird) Simpson are buried in Auld Kirk cemetery, Almonte.    William Earle Simpson is there too.

http://ocfa.islandnet.com/homepage.html

There is a post here that says Helen is also buried in that cemetery.   The poster says Helen died Jan 22 2000 and her obit is in the Brantford Expositor on Jan 24 2000.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0fbu/

This obituary search says her obit was in the Jan 26 and Feb 2 edition of that paper, and also in the Ottawa Citizen on Jan 24.

Hi again,

Local public libraries can be great resources.  Looking at where your relatives lived, these links might be helpful:

The Mississippi Mills Library (Almonte and other communities were incorporated into this town) has a local history collection.

http://mississippimills.ca/library/library_almonte.cfm

The Brantford Public Library also has a local history collection, but they charge a fee for lookups:

It is interesting to see that William's address on his Attestation Papers (WW1) was Ohsweken.  This is a village in a First Nations Reserve near Brantford.

I found a website that has pictures of grave markers from the Auld Kirk Cemetery (owned by a Scott Naylor): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~snaylor/OntGraMk/Lanark/Ramsay/AuldKirk/AuldKirk.HTM

Here's a link to the grave marker with William, Phoebe and Helen:

and the one for Jean Aird Simpson and her husband:
