Middlesbrough Shipyard Bottleworks
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 21:00 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me anything about the bottleworks at Middlesbrough shipyard in the 1860's ?

My 3x GtGrandfather was living and working there as a glass blower in 1861 (his wife and young son with him also, apparently living "on-site"). I have no idea how or why they moved there from Castleford, where surely there was plenty of work for glass blowers at that time. He was only there for a while, by 1871 he was in Wakefield and in 1881 the family had finally settled in Hunslet, Leeds. He was a glass blower all his life - as were his brothers and sons.

I can't seem to find much information at all regarding the "Shipyard Bottleworks" - any information or links to relevant websites would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

This link might be a help to you.  It mentions Earthernware and bottle works near the end of the page.

I saw a bottle works when I was looking for Tees Cottages for Smoggie45.

Go to www.old-maps.co.uk
Search for Dockside Road, Middlesbrough.
It will take you to a modern map, but there are old maps to choose from on the right-hand side.
Click on the first one, 1857 Pre-WWII 1:10,560 Yorkshire
Zoom in and just above the entrance to the dock, you will see Cleveland Iron Shipyard.
Just to the right of this, you may just be able to make out the words "Bottle Manufactory".

Maybe this is the one you want?
