Elizabeth CREED
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 12:20 BST (UK) »
From the UK census I have her birth year 1837 and her birth place possibly Massachusetts. She married William James Barratt in London in 1859 and the following censu always showed USA (British Subject)

Can anyone suggest where I can start trying to trace her roots?

Do you have her father's details from the marriage certificate? The address she was living at when she married in 1859 and the witness names could also help a lot.

It is likely her family were British and she came from the US to the UK in the company of some relatives - if not her mother and father, perhaps mother and step-father, siblings, aunt or uncle, etc.

I have her on the 1851 UK census living as a servant in Norwich. By 1859 she had presumably come to London as her husband to be had lived there all his life. I haven't been able to trace a record of the marriage in the parish registers which is strange as the Barratt family were active in the St Clement Danes Church. I have the civil register reference so will have to apply for the copy certificate.
