dob in brackets in parish records
« on: Friday 07 October 11 14:31 BST (UK) »
In the parish records for baptisms 1793 in Southleigh, Oxfordshire is the following entry...

(Nov.19)  Feb3rd    AYRES Hanna d Charles & Mary

Can anyone tellme what the brackets signify.

I would think that the date of Nov 19th was her birthdate and the baptism took place  about 11 weeks later. As to why it's in brackets........why not LOL  ;D

Have you seen the whole page,is that the way the vicar writes them all?
Each vicar will have their own way I imagine?

Of course someone may have a better answer  ;D

Yes, I have the parish records CD and it is just a one of. I think it could be to signify that the birth was in the year earlier than the baptism. But not really important I was just curious.

For interest -
I checked the page in the PR's at the library this morning and there were a couple of baptisms that had brackets in front of the date.
The page was headed Births and Baptisms.
Obviously births were in the first column and preceded baptisms. All the births that had brackets around the birth entry occured in the previous year. So possbibly/probably the reason

Could it be the earlier date is that of a Private baptism and the later one when the child was entered into church?
Mind you the PR's I have seen where a private baptism has taken place before entering church, are usually annotated accordingly but just a thought for you?

Could be Nigel but I am inclined to go with Lottee as I also think private baps would be annotated.
