Mcguires 1861 Lanarkshire
« on: Sunday 16 October 11 05:47 BST (UK) »
Hi is it possible for somebody to check the 1861 census for me?
The names are Patrick and Sarah Mcguire(nee Smullen) the registration district is Cambusnethan, reg no 628,county Lanarkshire,21 Furnace row, household schedule no 162.
I have the details on ancestry but can,t access the image through them.I am trying to find the place in Ireland they came from, not easy. ??? I was wondering if there was any clues on the image.
regards Mike

I can't help with the 1861 census, sorry.
Here are some entries from the burial records of Cambusnethan cemetery.

STILLBORN FEMALE McGUIRE. Newmains.
Parents - Patrick McGuire and Sarah Smorrin.
Interred in the old churchyard on 18th December 1860.

HUGH McGUIRE. Newmains, aged 3 years.
Parents - Patrick McGuire and Sarah Smorrin.
Interred in public ground 4th April 1861.

JAMES BURNS. Labourer, Wishaw, aged 74 years. Widower.
Parents - Patrick Burns and Mary McGuire.
Interred in E1029 on 11th December 1909.

(This last entry may help with the Burns connection, also in that grave is Jane Burns, maiden surname Morrison, aged 52 years, interred 1901).
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Have you tried any of the later census returns? The 1881 or '91 may show up a county of birth in Ireland.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

It maybe that the date and place of Patrick McGuire & Sarah Smorrin's marriage was on the birth record of Hugh McGuire born circa 1858.  He's the one Lodger said was buried in Cambusnethan 04 Apr 1861.

Unfortunately, Sage, I think Hugh's birth year might be too early for this info. Parents' marriage details were not included on children's birth certs until the early 1860s. Always a pity when you just miss out on some key piece of info isn't  :-\

Hi Monica,
yes I checked details included on Scotlands people site, not good :(
Another thing i realise on census for 61 and 71 is, at least Sarah must have gone back to Ireland to give birth to a son James,my direct ancestor. His older sister Rose Ann was born in Scotland, where as he was born in Ireland??? they must have gone back at least once...so confusing ???
