Resource Look up request - St John's Home, Walpole Road, Brighton
« on: Monday 17 October 11 22:21 BST (UK) »
Apologies - for posting on wrong board earlier.  Hopefully I have it right now.

Can anyone help me find the records of the inmates of St. John's Home for Convalescent and Crippled Children; also a School and Training Home for Orphan Girls, Walpole Road, Kemp Town, Brighton please?
My grandmother was living there according to the 1901 census and I'd dearly like to find out more about the establishment as well as finding any documents relating to why she was there and her circumstances at that time.
Thanking you in advance.
Sue

Hi Sue,

I know you posted this quite a while ago, but I thought it was worth replying!

I currently work at St. John's which is now a College for young people with learning disabilities. I am very interested in looking at the history of St. John's and hoping to speak to some of the relatives of people who might have stayed here or worked here in the past.

If you have found out any more about St. Johns' history over the past few years I would be delighted to hear from you. Also (if you do actually get this reply!) I would be happy to share with you any of my findings.

Rory

Message for Rory,
If you are still interested in the history of St John's convalescent home Walpole Road, my dad was there for about 9 months between Sept 1934 and June 1935 when he was 6 years old. He had pneumonia and his little brother had died from pneumonia in May 1934. I have some cards and letters which were written by him and sent home to his parents in Battersea, some have comments from 'Sister Superior'. If you see this and are interested I could maybe scan some and attach them for you, or perhaps photocopy them and send them to St Johns if you still work there.
Annette
