HOGG family Balnamore, Co. Antrim
« on: Monday 17 October 11 23:33 BST (UK) »
Hi I am searching for HOGG family of Balnamore. My grandfather Daniel Steele HOGG, married to Elizabeth Martha STEELE  & gr.grandfather William HOGG (mechanic at Balnamore mill) married to Mary Jane MOODY. I would like to go back in my roots, as far as I can, but by word of mouth, my gr.gr.grandfather is said to be William Gilmore HOGG, but I find it to be Andrew HOGG. If it is Andrew, the other problem is was he married to Jane GILMORE, or Elizabeth CONNOR? I am having a difficult time. If any one can help, I would appreciate it.  HOGG/STEELE/MOODY/GILMORE or ?? GILMOUR/  are also of interest. Regards  CAX

Hi,
It may be of interest that on 26 Mar 1883 John Moody married Mary Hogg in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney. Mary's father was called Andrew.

Daniel Steele and family are listed in 1911 census living at Balnamore- one of the sons is named William Gilmour HOGG so perhaps this is where there's been some confusion with family stories- and Daniel HOGG lists his birthplace as County Londonderry:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Seacon/Ballinamore_Town/126635

The 1901 census shows Daniel HOGG listed with parents and siblings- father William HOGG and mother Mary Jane- but all the family listed as born Co. Antrim:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Seacon/Ballinamore_Town/942459

In 1911 William HOGG and some of the family are still in Balnamore:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Seacon/Ballinamore_Town/126583

PRONI (www.proni.gov.uk) shows the administration (no Will) of the estate of William HOGG- "Hogg William of Balnamore Ballymoney county Antrim mechanic died 3 September 1922 Administration Belfast 12 January to Daniel Hogg mill worker. Effects £147."

There's also HOGG pedigree/dna mentioned here- although more research would probably be needed to confirm anything listed:
http://hdhdata.org/hoggdna/families.html

www.familysearch.org lists some children of Andrew Hogg and Elizabeth/Eliza Connor (birth registration started 1864 so there could be earlier children):
1. William born 4 Apr.1865 Belfast
2. Thomas Andrew born 24 Mar.1867 Belfast (page 316 in civil register)
3. Minnie born 20 Feb.1869 Co.Antrim
4. son born 4 May 1872 Belfast

Likely match in 1911 census for Thomas Andrew HOGG- wife Ada's birthplace is Cavan Co.Cavan (not Coleraine) on original image:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Bangor/Tennyson_Avenue/262533
Same family in 1901-

PRONI (www.proni.gov.uk) has Will of Andrew HOGG-
The Will of Andrew Hogg late of Belfast Linen Manufacturer deceased who died 3 May 1879 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oaths of James Johnston and Joseph Allen both of Lurgan County Armagh Linen Manufacturers the Executors.
Will mentions wife Elizabeth Hogg, sons Frederick William and Thomas (also mentions 'children' so there could be others), and business Hogg & Connor, York St., Belfast, along with partner Charles Connor.

1877 directory-
Hogg & Connor, shirt and collar manufacturers, 39 York Street
Hogg, Andrew (of Hogg & Connor), 40 Carlisle Street
1880 directory- 39 York St.: Hogg & Connor, collar manufacturers (not there in 1901)
