William Adams - possibly Brighton
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 20:43 BST (UK) »
Am trying to find info re my great uncle (having no luck with my grandma) but do not have a lot of info.
William Adams - born c1900-1905  and married a lady called Maude. They had a son & 2 daughters - Derek, Jean & Val. I believe he may have died in either Hove or Brighton.
Also brothers & sisters:
Fred Adams - born c1900-1910 married Jean. Had a son Norman
Annie Adams - born c1900-1910 married Arthur Betteridge.
Pretoria May Adams born 1901 married Ernest Solomon Gascoyne born 1895 in Northamptonshire (My Grandparents)
Jack Adams - possibly died WW1
Parents - William Robert Adams, Mother not known at the moment.
Have been told the children spent some time in a Salvation Army orphanage due to their house burning down/parents dying but not certain about this.
Any help greatly appreciated

There are three Pretoria Adams on the 1901 census but none born Sussex.   With a name as unusual as that it should not be a problem to find the birth certificate.    It does not show on FreeBMD but you will be able to find it on www.1837online.com and it should not cost much as you know the yera.  Ordering the certificate will give you both parents names.    You can then find them and other children in 1901.   Or look for the marriage of Pretoria and
Ernest.   In 1901 he is in Grafton Regis, Northants
William 46 Coachman Groom b Bucks Haversham?
Mary Ann 46 b Northants Woodend?
Dorothy Phyllis 8
Ernest Soloman 5 both born Grafton Regis

Hi Sillgen
Thanks for your reply. I already have the marriage cert but am struggling to find her or her siblings births. She spent some time in an orphanage (allegedly) and did not talk about her childhood. Also there are more Pretoria's than you would think and I cannot find hers anywhere, I think she wasn't born until July 1901 so would not be on that census.
Any suggestions?

I looked on 1837online and there is a Pretoria May Adams born Sep quarter 1900 in Bromsgrove ref 6c 342.   She can be found in 1901 in Stoke Prior but her father is George and mother Laura.  However she does have siblings who match your names so I think she is worth a second look.
George 37  Salt maker  b Stoke Works?
Laura 36 b Cornwall st Columb
Robert G 15
Frederick 10
Arthur 9
Anna 7
Richard 5
Roland 3
Laura 2
Pretoria 10mths all b Stoke Heath
Food for thought anyway!
