Hi Bashford,
Found this very likely marriage for the parents of John, but on the Index it gives the date of issue for the licence AFTER the marriage ceremony so I'm assuming that's a transcription error!  Anyhow, it ties in nicely with the information on the 1851 census that Andrea gave you.

guess practice and knowing the correct places to look

I have most of the 1851 census index for East Sussex in book form - bought from Sussex Family History Group.   In some ways that is easier to search than the internet!   It helps that I live in Sussex too.
Jane, on the other hand, lives miles away and still manages to do it!

elizabeth .. is aged 37 ...?  ... i have john tiften saxby married to elizabeth bashford  born 1821 ... in 1851 she would only be 30 !

That Elizabeth Saxby age 37 is unmarried - I assume a daughter of George and Elizabeth Saxby who are with her.  I expect the marriage Jane found is for them

due to another line of enquiry in my family tree im looking to check if errors have been made  but i still think elizabeth was 30 at time of census
