Adam Gibson or Marion Riddick
« on: Monday 24 October 11 16:05 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace my great great grandfather Adam Gibson wo I believe came from Kirkbean(or that area)

His DOB was 7/4/1774 and he married Marion Riddick (spelling?) who was born in 1786.

Any help would be great.  Thanks

Thank you both very much for that information.  Adam Gibson's son Wiliam was the headmaster at Sorbie school in Wigtownsire and was my great grandfather.

Thanks again

Here lyes Jean Murray, spouse to John Gibson, d 24.10. 1747 45 yrs,

That's another generation then  :)

Glad that it says Thomson on the MI, Matt. The cert definitely had it as Thompson and I was a wee bit surprised.

Thank you both again - One question I have for Gnu.  You have Adam Gibson born at Laidland, Sorbie.

I have looked at old maps and cannot find a Laidland, but there is a Ladyland farm near Kirkbean and the Kikbean Parish Heritage Society has a Gibson at that address from 1747 - 66.  Adam was born in 1774, but it seems too much of a coincidence and I would guess that Laidland is in fact Ladyland.

I know a lot of the old map makers got the original names wrong.  Does this make sense?

Hi

It might be or it might not. I see Ladyland on the 6 ins OS map but that was much later.

All I can say is that this is what it says on the death cert.
