1871 CENSUS
« on: Saturday 29 October 11 10:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,In the 1871 census for the parish of Kelton I'm looking to find an address, in the first colunm  under the heading " No of schedule "  it gives the number 24 in the village of Gelston this is for a Samuel Copland (corn dealer ) is there any way that this can be translated into an actual address ?
Thanks in anticipation

Hi

The page image just says 'Gelston Village' at the top of the page, so it would be difficult. You could try looking  on the header page (if using SP, you can click on the 'View Free Header' icon) or see if he's there on the 1861 or 1881  :-\

I have a copy of the 1871 census off SP but as you say it just gives gelston village but then it gives the number 24 which I presume was the 24ty dwelling that was visited .I don't know if there is any way that I can find out what house number 24 represents thanks for your interest

Just had a look at the 1881 to see if it would help but he's moved to Rhonehouse and remarried  :-\

I wonder if there are any trade directories that list him?

The Library in Castle Douglas has a really good Local History section and the librarians there arevery helpful. When I was there on of them helped me search through all the directories  and helped find some of my relatives.

*Are you anywhere near there?

*Added - I see you're in Cheshire - maybe a holiday  :-\
