Marrriage look up Stewart Richard THOMSON/Florence CHANT - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 29 October 11 23:10 BST (UK) »
Hello I'm new around here and I would like some help with a look up please. Not sure whether this will be Somerset, Wiltshire, or London, so have taken a stab at Somerset. Hope that's OK?

I am trying to trace the marriage of Stewart Richard Thomson, b 1882 Highworth Swindon, d 1941 Swindon, and Florence Chant, b 1878 Yeovil, d 1956 Swindon

In 1911 census Florence is still single and living in Yeovil, Somerset.

In 1915 she gives birth to Alexander S R Thomson, in West Ham followed by further births in West Ham in 1917 and 1918. Stewart Richard notified the first of those births

Stewart Richard was present in Swindon in 1901 census as a family member, but can’t find him anywhere in 1911 Census.
However the 1911 census shows the rest of the family scattered at various addresses following the death of his (Stewart Richard’s) father Alexander Thompson ( b 1845) in Swindon Workhouse in 1910

Many thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

There is no marriage showing up but I wonder if Stewart was already married when he and Florence got together??

Marriages March qtr 1903
Stewart Richard Thomson    Rugby  6d 631 to either Alice Irene Godfrey or Ada Sarah White

EDIT

Freebmd has 2 Stewart Richard Thomson births in 1882 - one in Wilts and one in Staffs.  The marriage above is more likely to be the one in Staffs

Hi Carole

Thanks for that. The Stewart Richard born in Staffs was in fact born in Wolverhampton. My Stewart Richard (my Grandfather) was definitely born in Highworth.
Him getting married in Rugby seems highly unlikely, so I am now wondering whether he ever married at all!!. Though knowing him I just cant believe that!!
C'est la vie - though I'm still puzzled how he appears to have eluded the 1911 census!
Thanks again for your prompt response

Terry

Hi Both

His occupation was Brass Finisher/Fitter with GWR Swindon. First for a 6 year apprenticeship and later as  a adult employee. For a big chunk of his later life he worked as a Maintenance Engineer for Garrard Swindon

I don't know how you found this SRT in 1911 with wife and  two kids. I search the 1911 with Find my Past and drew a complete blank! What am I doing wrong?
