Hi Canniffe

Do you have approximate dates of birth for these people and names/dates/places of birth for any children that you would expect to find with them in 1851/1861 ???

Best wishes

Thank you very much. This is definitely him but this is a funny old business--he was a farmer later on!

Hi Elaine,
Here is an entry from the 1841 census showing a Hilder family in Bilsington:
ref HO107 477-5 folio 9, Bilsington
Edward Hilder age 45 farmer
Amy do age 40
Thomas do age 16
Henry do age 2
Ellen do age 17
Harriott do age 5
(Henry and Harriott born in county, the rest not born in county)
It fits nicely with Henry for age and place of birth, but Edward is missing, and at the age of eight, he should still have been with his family. There are no other Hilder families shown in Bilsington on the 1841.

Hello Carol and thank you for this reply.  It must be them with the coinciding names.  These people had a horrible habit of sending their wee boys to prep school so perhaps he is off at Dotheboys Hall.  I am very pleased to complete the puzzle.
