Advice on how to order a Connecticut death cert please
« on: Tuesday 01 November 11 22:48 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone advise me the best way to get a Connecticut death certificate.

I know the date and town of death (and name) for the gentleman concerned so I believe I have all the information I need...

The Connecticut state site says that the certificate is available to anyone over 18 (http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3132&q=390664) and that I can order on-line through the Vitalcheck site.

The VitalCheck site says that I have to be a close relative or lawyer or ... (never mind the extra cost and what they charge for shipping to the UK!!!)

I can apparently order from the town office directly but the fee has to be paid as a postal money order (and I suspect that they will only post to the US). As far as I could find the only place I can get a postal money order is in a US post office  :(

Does anyone know how I can get round this problem?

Thanks

I see from your profile that you are in Scotland. You can purchase a postal money order from the Royal Mail in the UK. Just be sure to get an international postal order in US funds. I doubt you will have any problem with them mailing it to the UK.

Didn't think of that - off to have a hunt round the Royal Mail site to sort out how to do that  ;D Shows you how often I have bought postal orders..

Many thanks.

:'(  :'( The Royal Mail don't do international money orders any more. From what I was able to find out when I searched, Canada Post are the only people that do the US$ money orders other than the US post office. I do have an aunt in Toronto so that might actually be possible ....

I think I am going to have to give in and phone the town clerk and see if there will be a problem with a Canadian issued money order (with possibly Canadian sender details if they get printed on the money order) but UK details on the request form. Either that or see if they can come up with some other solution.

You could also try your bank to see if they have bank drafts in US funds. That's basically the same thing as a money order as far as I know. Here's a link to information about bank drafts at the Royal Bank of Scotland website:
