Duffy/Silvey Family
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 01:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi... I'm stuck..and looking for some help! :) SOS..

My Great Grandmother Eliza Jane Duffy was born on June 20, 1899 in Keady, Armagh - She died in 2002 in Etobicoke Ontario..unfortunately prior to me becoming serious about my family tree..and so therefore not asking her many questions.  She married my Great Grandfather Robert Kennedy on April 2, 1919 in Armaghbreague Presbyterian Church.  On October 15, 1922 she arrived in Canada with her 2 year old daughter (my grandmother-Agnes).  Where I'm stuck is with her family.  Her father James Duffy is listed on her ship records as living in Tullyglush, Keady, Armagh.  On her marriage record to Robert Kennedy, her parents are listed as James Kennedy and Margaret Silvey.  I believe I have found some information on the Silvey line, but I'm finding the Duffy line hard to follow, especially as the name is so popular.  Any assistance anyone could give me would be most helpful!

Thanks

You mention Eliza Jane arrived in Canada 15 Oct.1922. Found this in PRONI Will extracts and the date of death is a few days earlier- if this is Eliza's father then he would have died just after she left Ireland and just before she arrived in Canada.
Duffy James of Tullyglush county Armagh mechanic and farmer died 13 October 1922 Administration Belfast 5 May to Margaret Duffy widow. Effects £17 5s. Granted 5 May 1924.

In both the 1901 and 1911 census records there are Duffys in Tullyglush but not a James and Margaret with a young daughter. Perhaps the family moved there after 1911.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Aghadowey,

I found something like that a little while ago.  Perhaps it is true.  Eliza would not of known of her fathers death until she arrived in Canada.  It makes sense that this could be him.  It is possible that they moved to Tullyglush later in life, but I know they stayed in Northern Ireland, and I believe Armagh for most of their lives.  Thank you for this, I'm going to record his date of death, it seems to coincidental to not be accurate.

Hi Gortonboy,

That census definetly looks like my family, and all the dates match up.  So (and I have limited knowledge of Ireland/Northern Ireland) they may have lived in Darkly for the time they lived in Armagh?  I wasn't able to find anything confirming that they stayed.

Thanks for this information!

hi,,if you click on the 1901 census link above ,,,then click on the "show all information" box top right,,you will see James was a mechanic in a linen factory,,,,his occupation matches the record in the will.

this below looks like the family in 1911

Hi,
Duffy people have married Campbells in Tullyglush. These are my gr grandparents. These Duffys are easy to follow as they are church of ireland. Many Duffys would normally be Catholic.

Tullyglush is small in numbers of people and spread out, before the car would have been a tiny bit remote.  I would bet that many of the community would have been related via marriage.
