GEORGE E BUTLER
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 08:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Can anyone please throw any light on the whereabouts of George E Butler, b Everton 1864 son of Matthew and Anne Butler. At the 1881 census he was a barristers clerk. I can't find anything about him since.
Many thanks
Michael

Is this the family without George in 1891,Mother Annie living with daughter Matilda and her family in 33 Makin St Walton grandson Arthur Glendenning still with them from the 1881. Matilda's husband away at sea.

This may help you with other family for your tree.
Arthur and Edward Glendenning living with the family are the children of Annie and Edward Glendenning, (I think Annie is Annie Butlers older daughter who is on the the 1851 census) Annie Butler Glendenning died and her husband remarried in 1880, leaving his children with his mother in law. He went on to have 10 children with his 2nd wife Jane, 5 of whom died.

A lot of records for Arthur G travelling to USA, and his baptism record states his father was a steward on the ships.

Hello Susie
Thanks for you help and interest in my post.
My George is not the George Edwin b. West Derby as the parents are wrong.
It could be him going back to Canada.I wondered if he went abroad. He is not a close relation but to find out about him tidies things up a bit.
Yes that is the family living in Makin Street.
Thanks also for the info about the Glendinning boys I think that will be helpful.
Many thanks
Michael

Hi

I am interested in this thread as it mentions my husband's very elusive great-grandfather Edward GLENDE(N)NING.

I can't find him on any census before 1891, though he claims to have been born in Liverpool, around 1844. His profession as a ship's steward probably meant he was always at sea on census night, though that doesn't explain his absence from the 1851. On his marriage certificate he names his father as Samuel Glendenning, surgeon- no trace of him either. He claims to be a widower when he marries Jane (Jenny) KELLY in 1880, but I can't find a death for Ann(ie) BUTLER. My husband's grandfather, born seven months after the marriage to Jane Kelly, was called Edward, which is a bit strange when he has a living half-brother also called Edward.
