Help needed with William Chapman
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 17:42 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some help re a William Chapman. The information I have is:

From the 1841 census - Reg District -  Saffron Walden, Sub District - Radwinter, Parish - Wimbush, Address- Dockley Lane, Wimbush, Essex

He appears here as Wm Chapman born 1801 aged 40 born in Essex, with a wife Mary Chapman born 1806 aged 35 and their children - Joseph b 1828, although he is recorded as Josiah down the line, ( he is my direct ancestor) Robt Chapman b 1831, Wm Chapman b 1833, Chas Chapman b 1836, Elizabeth Chapman b 1840.

I have been able to link him to Josiah Chapman my ancestor as Josiah married Elizabeth Perry on 12 Feb 1848 in Radwinter and Robert Chapman his brother was a witness.

I have additionall found a marriage in 1823 between William Chapman and Mary An Burrow in Little Chesterford, Essex. on findmypast but have been unable to verify that is the same William.

Any help with William birth, marriage, or death details and any parentage records would be very gratefully received.

kind regards

Judy

Hi

As 1841 census does not specify relationships, and ages are rounded, and no birthplaces given, then finding the family in 1851 is helpful -

1851
HO107 1786 590 19
Wimbsh
William 48 Ag lab bn Wimbish
MAry 48 wife bn Ashden
Robert 18 son
William 17 son
Charles 14 son
Elizabeth 11 dtr
Ann 8  dtr
Emily 4 dtr
Emma 9mths dtr  all children bn Wimbish

Getting a birth cert for one of the children born after 1837 will give you Mary's maiden name. That will then help you to find the correct marriage for Willam and MAry.

For Williams christening, it looks as if you need to look at Wimbish Parish Registers. They will be at the Essex Record Office in Chlemsford. Some are online on the SEAX website, worth checking on that.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

me again
found these on family search
thomas chapman wed sarah forster 11 nov 1802  wimbish , this  could be williams parents marriage
and 2 marriages for a william chapman to mary jennings 27 mar 1827 boreham [ a bit unlikely due  to the distance ] and
william chapman wed a mary girgoose 28 april 1827  radwinte [ a lot more likely as the 2 places aren,t that far apart  ]

I have this family in my wife's family tree. Although only as a twig on a branch as I have not linked this particular Chapman line with other Chapman families from Wimbish and Radwinter from which she is a direct descendant.

William Chapman b c1802 Wimbish, married Mary Greygoose b Jan 1804 Ashdon, in Radwinter  28 Apr 1827. Mary was baptised in Ashdon 26 Feb 1804 at the age of 6 weeks, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Greygoose. I have not followed either line further back in time.

The baptism given by Trevor at Thaxted is highly probable as in those days, there was a direct road from Wimbish Green, where the Chapmans lived to Thaxted, less than 2 miles away,. They were a similar distance from either Wimbish or Radwinter parish churches.

My connection with this family is via daughter Emily (sister of Joseph/Josiah), who married an Alfred Andrews in 1866.

Since posting my previous message I have taken the opportunity to look at William Chapman and Mary Greygoose a little closer. In particular to see whether William's parents are the Thomas and Sarah Chapman who had a son William baptised at the Thaxted Independant Meeting House in 1804. There was also a baptism in Wimbish 14 Oct 1804, birth Sep 1804 of a William Chapman, parents William and Elizabeth.

Looking at the 1841 1851 and 1861 census there were two William Chapmans of almost identical age, in Wimbish. Yours with wife Mary and the other with wife Harriet. Harriet died in 1859, age 50. Both couples lived fairly close to each other in Wimbish Green.

In 1841 Your William gives an age of 40 whilst the other gave his age as 35. As you are probably aware ages were generally rounded down to the 5 below in 1841, meaning that your's DoB should have been between 1796-1801 and the other between 1801-1806. This indicates that the other was the birth in Dec. 1803. In 1851 however both give an age of 48 (DoB 1802/3) and in 1861 yours is 57 and the other 58, indicating that he is now the elder.

Your William was buried in Wimbish 25 April 1863, with a recorded age as 60 DoB 1803,and the other survived until Dec 1882 when his age was recorded as 82, DoB1800.

All in all the results are inconclusive, he may be the son of Thomas and Sarah or it may instead be the other.
